Here's the deal:
I have a planted tank (well, kind of) and it's driving me nuts. I have 3" of Aqua Soil and I really like the looks of the stuff. I put in some plants a month ago and now I have snails. A week ago I started getting worms in the tank too. A bit of algae as well.
It's pissing me...
I assume this is protein... on top of my water I noticed an oil or soap slick. Thin layer of something chemically.
I have not used any soap or oil around my tank!
It's either something that came off my skin as I stuck my arm in and worked on the tank, or something else.
1. Is this typical?
2...
I'm not a Co2 expert so I could use your advice. Is this a good setup? Someone will sell it to me for under $200:
A Victor Dual Stage rig using a Clippard Mouse Solenoid and Swagelok metering valve.
Good deal? The Clippard solenoid has been used but all else is new.
Well, I don't know if this thing is starting to cycle or if the change in water is from my decorations and new media.
My ammonia readings went from 4.0 ppm for the first 6 days down to 2.0 ppm this morning, day 7.
Last night I added some boiled wood (to get the tannins out) and added 2 liters...
I don't want to hijack this thread any more than I have already.

I have a 405. It came with BioMax and Carbon.
I was told that Seachem's Matrix was better than BioMax.
I fully expected to fill the canister with Matrix (I bought 2 liters of product) but it only filled two trays to the top.
Also, I packed my bottom tray with poly-fill.
Then, I took the...
I've been reading elsewhere to put floss in the top tray not the bottom tray (it doesn't make any sense to me either).
How often do you change the poly-fill? Weekly? Monthly?
Okay! My Matrix arrived this morning!
I am doing a fishless tank cycle and I am on day 6.
Should I wait until the tank is cycled before I screw with anything or change out the media now? I can always place the BioMax in the tank in case it was growing bacteria already.
Okay, I opened all the windows of my house last night and this morning it smells just fine.
The water was very brown after 3+ hours of boiling.
I placed the wood into buckets of fresh water this morning so see if they will turn the water red/brown by the time I get home from work. If it looks...
I bought some wooden pieces at a LFS today and I'm boiling them per the instructions on the label and posts here.
GOD, IT STINKS!
I don't know how I am ever going to get that tanin smell out of the house! :(
I have the tank at about 87F (86.8F) and I'm on day 5. I added air yesterday and it really makes the water evaporate quickly.
It also makes water appear on the top of my tank (see photo).
I wiped it down today and noticed some little brown slime or something in the corner of the tank. I also...
That's what I understand too... I have no idea which ones work so I haven't bought anything. I use Seachem products so I am inclined to trust their Stable but who knows.
