    Oscar Fish HITH

Yes they enjoy it quite often. That is where they hide out when i am cleaning the tank (they don't enjoy that at all) and when they sleep. I'll try to remember tonight to take a picture and post it for you. I'm not sure what to do soon when they out grow it. They are getting rather large.

    Oscar Fish HITH

I don't think I would worry. My two oscars hang out under one of my rock caves together all the time. They just kind of lay there and rest (vertically). They also swim together all the time like your other picture. I would say mine isn't a pair and they exhibit that same behavior. Nice...

how to obtain the biggest bioload?

Are you testing your water? Do you even know where you are at with respect to the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? I do agree with all suggestions so far.

    new guy

Nice tank. Is that a common pleco I see in the background?

I have an idea and need opinions first.

Are you going to plug the motor in to run? If so, you might be asking to drain your whole tank if the return pump dies or flood if the AC50 motor dies. I guess maybe not the latter since there would be flow out the bottom so it might keep flowing. Hmmm.. Am I thinking right?

    220g in wall?

+1 BigJim. It does cost a bit more but way less than getting your drywall all full of mold and then having to tear it all back out to redo it.

    Just got my tank

Yeah there would be a mini cycle but he isn't going to set up the new tank, move over the filters and let it sit for a week with everything in the old tank and no filter. If it were me, I'd move everything over (except the sand) and then just carefully watch the parameters so if they get...

    Just got my tank

As long as the parameters match, it will be fine. Just think of it as a PWC except not really ;).

    Just got my tank

I'm coming in this fresh. Are you completely moving filters etc from the 36 to the 75 gallon? If that is the case, then there should be little to no cycle. If you are leaving the 36 active and start the 75 then you will have to cycle completely. I will need to know more about your plans on...

    best canister?

I have 2 Rena XP3's on my 125 for my two oscars and I can't complain. I know this is outside the topic of the thread but it worries me that you are putting "my oscars and a few others" in a 75 Gallon. Just be careful as oscars get up to 18" each. The only two fish in my 125 are the two oscars.

Chemi-pure promises Zero water changes, Ever!

I'm not saying they are right or wrong but they said "Salt Water". I'm sure they are claiming to top off with RO/DI or something else.

    Just got my Cichlids!!!

Just so you are aware, I have two Oscars in a 125 Gallon 6 ft long tank. I bought them December 26th 2009 which is just over a year ago and one is 6 or 7 inches and one is 8 or 9 inches. So if you plan on moving them within 6 months or so, I would never put them in a 40 gallon or whatever this...

    Just got my Cichlids!!!

I hate to break it to you but the Tiger Oscar and the Dempsey will quickly outgrow that tank. The Oscar should have a minimum of a 75 all by itself to be complete fair. I am not sure how big the convict or the Bumblebee will get as I've never had one. Just so you know, the oscar can reach 12 -...

    oscars.....

+1 on leaving the cartridges. Rinse them out weekly with old tank water. How big are your two fish? I have 2 oscars in a 125 gallon with 2 Rena XP3's but my oscars are about 10" already. I opted to just take off the strainers and let it suck everything up. If you do this, you have to keep up...

New Cichlids! Got a question about BGK

That is a lot of messy eating fish for that size tank. I have 2 Oscars in a 125 gallon alone as they create a huge mess and your 1 oscar will far outgrow the 55 gallon.

Started new aquarium, everything was fine for awhile, then a death..whats happening?

Ok, I think he gets that the cycle with fish is a bad thing. To answer his question (which has been answered a few times), yes it was the ammonia and nitrites that killed the fish. Anything above 0 will harm them in some fashion. Glad you are learning and doing the right thing with the 50...

    Undergravel Tunnels

I'm not saying this is or isn't possible but you sound so sure that they wouldn't use it. Are you speaking from experience or just speculation?

    Undergravel Tunnels

What if you had a canister filter and hooked up the outlet to this thing so it had flow through it? Do you think it would be too much that the fish wouldn't use it then?

    Canister Filters

Another point, if you are set on buying two canisters, i would use them both right away. Very small possibility that both will die at the same time. And for example, my original XP3 is 5 years old and still running strong. So it might be more beneficial to just use both right away and have...

    Canister Filters

As for your original question, I have two 75 gallons and I use 1 Rena XP3 on each. They are reliable filters and not too expensive. For my 125 gallon, I have 2 XP3's running. Water is always clear.
