    10 gallon algae control?

Our office is actually an old duplex house that was converted into an office building. My personal office is a small bedroom that has 2 north facing windows. Windows don't get much direct line sunlight, and the light that comes in just lights the general office area. Tank is not sitting in...

    10 gallon algae control?

For a blackout can I just leave the internal lights off, or do I need to find something to cover up the whole thing? I still may look for some type of algae eater fish. Mainly because I like having different varieties of fish to look at. Kind of boring if they are all duplicates of the same...

    10 gallon algae control?

One honey dwarf gourami and 4 harly rasboras. Probably adding a male guppy or 2 after the holidays. Tank is in my office, so I'm going to have to rely on a vacation feeder for about a week and a half. I might just unplug the light while I'm out & see if that helps. My office has 2 windows...

    10 gallon algae control?

Lights on a timer that runs from about 7 am to 5 pm. And I do have the bio-room for another fish. Maybe Molly is onto something. Any recommendations on an algae eater that will fit in a 10 gal? All the pleco's are out, aren't they?

    10 gallon algae control?

Hey all. I was here tons during my cycling process, but went away for a while once I finally got stocked with little fishies. Tank has been "fishified" and running flawlessly since Oct 26 (easy to remember since that was my birthday!). Keeping an eye on all the parameters with trusty API kit...

    Killin' snails

The first was a turquoise mystery snail, and it most definitely died. It was a visual confirmation, and I'll just leave it at that. #2 mystery snail didn't have anything wrong visually, so maybe I flushed him prematurely. #3 is a mystery & #4 is a nerite, and they are both in the tank now...

    Killin' snails

My cycled 10 gallon is doing great with fish. Amm and ites stay at 0 and ates stay manageable between my weekly 20%-ish water changes. Temp rock steady at 78. Why am I sacrificing snails? I've gone through 4 now from 2 different stores. They are really active when I get them in the tank and...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

Finally got the ammonia cycling again shortly after the message you just referenced. Not sure what caused the temporary stall. It never would get everything to zero, but the ammonia-nitrite-nitrate process was definitely going. After almost 2 months of waiting, I finally said "screw it" and...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

During the last 2 water changes, I switched to Prime (had been using NovAqua+ before). The Prime calls for a MUCH smaller dose than the NovAqua. For a 10 gallon tank the math works out to 1 mL to treat the entire tank, which only comes out to a couple of big drops. That's the dose I used, and...

    Fluval C3 HOB question

Received a nice Fluval C3 as a gift yesterday. :thumb: Just wondering if it is massively oversized for my 10 gallon. Specs on box say 153 gph, 20-50 gallon tank. The thing I do like is that I someday plan to upgrade to maybe a 20 or 30 gallon tank. Don't think I would ever get any bigger...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

Had a bit of a setback over the weekend. Another stupid pH crash at some point, and everything halted. Did a big WC yesterday and put the lace rock in there this time to see if that helps with pH stabilize. Since it is in my office, I don't have a ton of time to mess with it. I'm just ready...

    10 gal stocking plan

I do like guppies, but I'm not interested in breeding fish. Tank is probably too small for that, and it's in my office. Just wouldn't have the time to devote to it.

    10 gal stocking plan

Given that my cycle is so close to completion, I'm revisiting the anticipated stocking plan. Hope that next week is the magic week. Even though I should have a major biofilter now, I'm still planning to only add a few of these at a time. Here are my global community requirements: 1 -...

Amount Of Ammonia 29 Gallon FW

You most definitely lose the control tightness with shrimp. It's just the only option some folks have. And be careful with the Ace stuff. It is POTENT. As you've seen, less than a tsp will handle the full 30 gal. I went to a local grocery pharmacy, and they gave me a plastic dropper for free...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

Nah. I won't be upset. This mornings results gave me a bit of a second wind. It was proof positive that I'm really close even if it's not tomorrow. Won't be stocking til next week anyway.

Amount Of Ammonia 29 Gallon FW

Unfortunately, you may NOT find it. Getting to be a pain, but I can confirm the Ace stuff is pure. Alternate method is to use shrimp enclosed in a panty hose baggie & let it decompose.

Amount Of Ammonia 29 Gallon FW

That won't do it. Surfactant is a no no. And you should be about 4.5 mL ammonia (if it's the 10% concentration which seems to be fairly consistent).

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

LOG WED OCT 12 Hallo-freakin-lujah!!! I *may* be there. I got in this morning and ammonia & nitrite were both clean ZERO. I dosed 'er back up to 4 ppm this time, and we'll see what everything looks like tomorrow morning. Not sure what to expect since I didn't do a full dose yesterday...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

During your ordeal, were you showing -ites and -ates? Mine are off the charts which at least tells me the bacteria are there. The -ite to -ate conversion just can't keep up with the ammonia conversion speed.

Do you know WHY yours took 4 months? I keep feeling I'm doing something wrong or missing something. For the life of me I don't know what it could be.

LOG TUE OCT 11 Like the stupid Energizer bunny . . . . . . . still going, and going, and going. pH = 7.5 Amm = 1 Nitrite = off chart Nitrate = off chart I had a small glimmer of hope when I got here yesterday morning. Nitrite was all the way down in the 0.25 to 0.5 range after the weekend...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

LFS was out of coral, but they gave me (free!) some small "lace rock" fragments that they said are basically the same thing. I crushed them into roughly BB size with a hammer, and I'll get my wife to donate some old panty hose as a filter bag. LFS advised simply continuing to wait while doing...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

My usual pH is 7.5, and it was already back below 7.0 again today. Did about a 50% change to nip the next crash in the bud. I've stopped logging as it's basically the same every morning (except pH flucutations). Amm=0 with nitrite and nitrate way off charts. Hoping to stop by LFS on the way...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

You and librarygirl both mentioned the coral, so that's something I need to look into more. How do you know how much to use? Are there other measurements outside the API standard kit that now get thrown in the mix? I want to keep this somewhat simple, but safe, once I (finally) get to the...

10 gallon cycle log (& questions galore)

So what would be the recommendation? Just keep monitoring all the levels & wait it out? Is there anything else I need to be adding?
