    Reef Salinity

I'd stay at 1.025 or so. as long as it is constant. For those of you that think that 1.020-1023 will reduce the number of parasites, you would be incorrect. It has been proven that ick(the most common parasite that we all try to avoid) will live in a sg as low as 1.016 or maybe lower...

    Overflow rates (fluidics help please)

(about 2.5 feet away horizontally) as long as you don't have any horizontal sections of overflow to sump drain pipe the measurements will be negligible.(At least in these terms) The only thing that sholuld really choke the flow of an overflow is piping size(try to minimize fittings) , The...

Cant get my water clear to save my life

With only 12 lbs of lr it will take longer for the water to clear. Especially if all of the substrate was changed at once. Don't worry, it will. Just clean out intake sponges frequently. :fadein:

Nassarius snails and blue leg hermits?

Nassirus snails spend 95% of their life under the sand. Mine only surface at feeding time. Therefore less succeptible to be harrassed for a new house.

    Maxi-jet powerhead

pulling it apart and cleaning the impeller is the only maintenance I have ever had to do. If that dosen't work look into a replacement.

A poll for my own curiosity ...

I had a tank with dolomite substrate (it was the best new stuff in the late 80's) It looked like fw rock but white and kept the pH up. until I ditched the ugf, upgraded the skimmer, used a ro/di and switched to sand I had a problem

About to purchase my first Salt Water Setup

I would replace the fluval with a sump. There is a calculator at the top of the page to help with how much. Bow fronts are tricky to calculate. but shoot for aboult 4" There are good many posts touting the ac skimmers. For the sand I would look into bagged dry sand from lfs. The "live sand...

Opinion on a 5G prop tank

A sepparate prop tank is a good idea. Make sure to run carbon after cutting. The only problem is stability with a 5 gal. top up frequently or get An auto top off Frag swaps are great

    Fuge Idea (Yes or No?)

It sounds like the only option if you wanted to grow macro. It would work the same way as if you had a glass tank as a sump, and the first section, where the overflow dumped into would be set up as a fuge. My only thought would be to drill the 10 gal almost at the top and plumb an elbow to...

    Silly jawfish

good luck :D I would look into closing up the holes in the top of the tank with egg crate. Next time she may not be as lucky jumping and wind up carpet surfing.

    Sump Recommendations

Hooking up the ro/di to an auto topoff is helpfull. If you have the room behind the tank. I havn't worked on one yet, but not having to top up every 2 days would save some maintenance. For the sump go as big as you can fit. Taller also helps if you want to grow macro.

Conflicting reports on Saron shimrp eating zoo's?

saron is a genus name. can you id the species type? I think some spp. of saron will eat zoos, while others don't. A well fed shrimp is also less likely to mess with them.

    Should I.......

stitching from a 33 to a 54 will probably require more sand. If you have acess to live sand ( noth the bagged junk from lfs) I would make up the difference with that. If not then rinse the new sand, but not the existing sand.

    Miscellaneous Questions - New Installation

I would also reccomend skipping the canister. Getting a tank that is drilled. Or getting the one you have drilled ( can be done at a local glass shop for under $10/ hole. ) As long as the bottom is not tempered. a tempered bottom will shatter when drilled. You can then use the holes to...

    I might have a lead on a FREE 110H...

Tor a tank that is 30"tall you will probably have to use mh lighting if you are going to do a reef. Until the time that you decide to go that way stick with what came with the tank. What type of lighting was it? could you also list the other equip as well. Just because I really want to feel...
