    Compatible catfish

I just found a site offering a redtail/shovelnose hybrid Redtail Cat / Shovelnose (hybrid) regular as cool as the fish is I'm trying to go more natural with the stocking, but if I can't find a regular shovelnose anywhere right away I think I might just have to get one of these!!

That is a pretty sweet looking fish! As for where to find a normal tiger shovelnose they are occasionally available at liveaquaria.com the page is here: Freshwater Aquarium Fish: Tiger Shovelnose Catfish

    Compatible catfish

I love redtails but i've read they get to 4.5 feet. I've also seen the episode of river monsters where he catches a 90lb redtailed catfish, which is way more than I think I would be able to handle. Still an awesome fish though, if i ever have the opportunity to get a REALLY huge tank I would...

    Compatible catfish

Its a long way off but in the future I am planning on getting my first large aquarium. My plan is to start with an arowana and work my stocking list around that, staying within the south american biotope. I will want a large catfish for this tank and I've really fell in love with the...

    JD questions

Mine was about 5 in when I got it and it took maybe 3 or 4 months to reach full size. IME jd's only are dark if the tank has dark substrate or when they are defending territory.

    JD not very active

A lot of times it just depends on the personality of the fish. I've had my JD for 6 months now and he's actually become lazier than he was early on. He spends the whole day hiding in one of his caves and only occasionaly will dart accross to the one on the other side. Its only in the evening and...

    Jack Dempsey and Oscar

Thought I'd update on my JD. He and the catfish were starting to compete for space too much and my firemouth was becoming the terror of my other tank, so in a last ditch effort to keep the firemouth I switched him and the catfish around. I wasn't expecting the JD to tolerate the firemouth but...

    Most aggressive cichlid?

Parachromis Dovii (Wolf Cichlid) and Parachromis Managuensis (Jaguar Cichlid). I've never owned one (though i'm hoping to get a jag soon) but i've seen many people comment on how vicious some of these guys are. They say you even have to keep an eye on a mated pair because sometimes if there is a...

    tetra parasite guard help

I've used it before and it turned my water a yellowy-green color for a few days. It faded after a that but it was still noticably colored until i did a pwc

    Swordtail mafia

I've tried feeding them at the same time but they are always more interested in my hand than the food, even if they are on opposite sides of the tank. I am going to attempt to feed him at night but I'm not sure if i can get a level of light that will let me see what i'm doing without them...

    Swordtail mafia

In one of my tanks i have a striped peacock eel that I have trained to eat from my hand. I did this because he only eats bloodworms and just leaving them sitting on the bottom made it too easy for my 5 swordtails and firemouth cichlid to shove the eel away and take it all for themselves...

    55 gallon Jack Dempsey

There are a lot of different kinds of plecostomas, the common pleco that most places like petco and petsmart sell grow up to 2 feet and need more than a 55 gal. There are species that don't get as big though, like the rubber lip pleco or bristlenose pleco only get about 5 inches long. I made...

    55 gallon Jack Dempsey

It should be fine. What kind of pleco is it?

    55 gallon Jack Dempsey

a 55 is big enough for a JD but not a lot else. you may be able to have a medium sized pleco or catfish as long as you introduce them while the JD is still small but anything other than bottom feeders won't have a chance once the JD gets bigger and more aggressive

    Oscar & Jack Dempsey

I would say its up to you which you want to keep. It is true that male cichlids are generally more aggressive. Female JDs are slightly less colorful than males, but are still very striking fish. I personally prefer male cichlids because they have more color and I enjoy the occasional display of...

    Oscar & Jack Dempsey

Plecos and catfish can go with a JD, as long as they are not too small. Just don't put too many in because if it feels crowded it may become more aggressive. My JD lives with a striped rapheal catfish and a common pleco (who I may need to re-home if I can't get a bigger tank soon) in my 55 gal...

    Oscar & Jack Dempsey

I think a 75 gallon should be big enough for the oscar, and the 55 will be big enough for a single JD.

    Jack Dempsey or Hybrid?

I'm not sure if it is a hybrid anymore... Its stripes and spots are fading a little and the blue spots are spreading and getting brighter. I think it may have still been stressed from the store and the move to my aquarium. Also I have been looking around the internet and found a number of...

    Jack Dempsey or Hybrid?

I'm assuming this was a fish that someone brought into the store because it had outgrown its tank or some other reason because all the other JDs were only a couple inches. I think they solved the mystery on the thread that originally started this. I think it may be a Jack Dempsey/ Red Terror mix.

    Jack Dempsey and Oscar

I think your right. It has a lot of characteristics in common with a red terror. I think the mystery is solved! I agree he is a very good looking fish, he immediately caught my eye at the store. I'll be very interested in watching him grow now to see how his colors develop. I'll be sure to post...

    Jack Dempsey or Hybrid?

Yes I know, I got the JD because tomorrow I am giving all the community fish in that tank to a friend for his daughter. All that will be with him is a pleco a raphael catfish and a rainbow shark.

That does look different from mine. Well now I'm really curious to know what exactly I've got my hands on. If you could help me figure that out it'd be great. I have more pics here: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f100/jack-dempsey-or-hybrid-168682.html

    Jack Dempsey or Hybrid?

I recently purchased this fish from a local petsmart thinking it was just a regular jack dempsey cichlid as the label at the store said, but after posting some pics some people have said he's a hybrid. If anyone could help me figure out what he is I would greatly appreciate it!

    Jack Dempsey and Oscar

Finally managed to get a decent picture. He's still getting used to me so its hard to get close enough for a pic. The blur behind him is one of my giant danios. They will all be at my friends by tomorrow. I was in a hurry to get the JD before he killed the convict that was in the tiny tank...
