Also check you phosphate levels, a high level will cause hair algae. Since this is a Goldfish tank how often are you changing your water?

Today is the first day in a long time where it was sunny and I was home during the day. The sun angle is now lighting up the tank for hours. I'll cover it until the angle changes. I ordered a test kit to check my water for phosphates Thanks for the input.

What can I add with Goldfish?

The general rule of thumb is one Goldfish for each 10 gals of water at a minimum so you really can't add another fish. Goldfish create a lot of waste so they need quite a bit of water per fish. Besides, Goldfish are not tropical so they like water cooler then what tropicals require. A Goldfish...

    Green Water Battle

My Goldfish tank has been suffering green water. My schedule has not permitted me to really attack it until this week. 30gal 10 month old tank,, Emperor 400 planted three inch gravel bottom. This week I've done 30% to 50% water changes daily and limited the light to an hour a day. The tank is...

    filter for a 29 gallon

Instead of a Penguin, look at an Emperor filter also made by Marineland. It has a bigger bio-wheel, bigger filter pad and is a better filter imo. Purchase it online, not in a Pet store and you'll save 50%.

My first step to a planted tank

I'll assume you have a standard hood with a single tube light which would be 20 watts. I would suggest a glass hood such as a Versa Glass Top TWIN TUBE, I think you'll need the 30' top but double check and a Compact Fluorescent light. which will get you around 2 wpg or higher depending on the...

    Lighting question

I've asked this question to the manufactures and a few retailers and received no help so I thought I'd ask here. I want to replace the lighting on one of my tanks to provide more light, it's a 29g tank with a full hood. It has a standard 30' fluorescent tube light fixture. Will a 30' compact...

Diatom Outbreak, NO END IN SIGHT!

When the attack of Diatoms effected my tank I pickup a few Otto Catfish. It was completely cleaned up in two days. Easy, fast and cheep!

    algae and airstones

Try 3 or 4 if very small, Otto Catfish. That should take care of your problem. You want to avoid adding to much load to your tank and putting to many Otto Catfish in will cause them to complete for a lessening food supply when the Diatoms are under control. BTW, you might want to try using a...

    algae and airstones

Yes they will. I put 8 little guys in a tank to handle an out of control Diatom outbreak, they cleaned the tank up in 2 days.

    New Emperor Filter Cycling Question

I have an established Penguin filter in one of my tanks. I want to replace it with an Emperor 400, how can I speed the filter/bio-wheel bio-bug development without causing havoc with the water chemistry? Anyone do this before? The bio wheels are different sizes so I can not move them to the new...

    Penguin User's Filter Options

To follow up on this thread. Two weeks ago I replaced my standard throw away penguin filters with the filter frames and pads. I placed two pads in each frame with no media. The water has remained clear. I swish the frame/pad combo in used tank water during water changes and put the unit back in...

Spoken like a true byte-head as I use to be before I moved behind a desk. All the tech talk not withstanding and which doesn't mean anything to the average user, the reason corporations and people buy computers is to run applications that they want to make use of. They want that new ERP...
