try this metal halide combo Dual 250 watt MH Ballast plus two sockets for $185. You can buy the bulbs elsewhere for about $70 each. I'm running two 400 watt MH ballasts, two 175 watt and one 250 watt ballast. They do NOT hum

New starfish - Protoreaster nodosus - Chocolate Chip Star

When I came home last night, my chocolate chip star was munching on one of my mushrooms. So, into the sump he went. It was a surprise gift from my wife, we've had it about two (2) weeks, and this is the first time we've witnessed it eating. There is some good news, my wife wants me to set up...

    At wits end!

Do you dose with calcium? There are several books, including Sprung's reef series, that discuss how phosphate is precipitated out by the introduction of calcium (kalkwasser). I'd do a little research before I tore my tank down. Mine's been running for 2.5 months, and while I had a small...

    recommended fish breeding project

I'm looking for some advice or recommendations on a fish breeding project. Many of you may find this strange - the only freshwater fish I've successfully bred and raised were livebearers back in the late 70's. I've successfully bred and raised saltwater cardinals (Bangaii) and percula clowns...

Do you guys/gals buy fish online?

My local fish stores are pretty poor. I've placed several orders on-line, and have been extremely pleased with the quality of the livestock (both fish and invests). Please, live aquaria gives a 14 day guaranty. Find a LFS who'll match that!

    will this algae ever end

Tropical abalones do a great job. Put one on each pane of glass. Plus they're pretty cool looking.

Little hard white things stuck in my leather!

The one next to the dime is a type of parasitic oyster. I read an article about them years ago, but can't place it right now. The other look like spicules, part of the normal structure of a leather, but found on the inside. I think your leather is too stressed to frag, and even then, you may...

    Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

The unit I purchased is a 75 gpd unit. I ran it for several hours straight, and TDS readings are now down to 1 to 2 ppm (down from 54 ppm). I expect them to continue falling as the unit breaks in. Thanks for everyone's advice!

    Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

I ran a test with distilled water, which gave a reading of 1ppm, Then I tested my tap water, and the reading was 22ppm. I then retested my ro product water, and obtained a reading of 54ppm, and my ro waste water is 65ppm. I've only run about 10 gallons of product water throught the unit, which...

    Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Would anyone know what the TDS measurements should be for reverse osmosis water? My new unit is delivering water with a TDS reading of 20 ppm(?), and my tap water is reading 22 ppm.

    Bulb anenome

My new Bulb Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) has decided to settle in the back of my aquarium behind about 100lbs of live rock. I can see his tentacles through spaces in the rock - but he's way back in the shadows. Any idea on how I can coax him back out? I'd hate to tear down my reef to...

    Harlequin Tusk Wrasse

I've had several over the years. My last one was 10"+ and one day he bit my arm while I was cleaning the tank. I still have the scar 6 years later. They have teeth like an alligator, and when they bite, they don't let go. They're still among the coolest fish, and I'd get one in a heartbeat...

    refugeium lighting

I have a 40 gallon sump in my 120 reef. I'm thinking of stocking the sump with either xenia or tridacna, and was wondering what type of lighting to use in the sump. I'd like to rule out MH, the heat build up in the cabinet would max out my chiller and fan. Also the main tank is lit with...

    What about a fluidized filter...

coincidentally, I just started using an old Red Sea fluidized bed filter for carbon on the 120 I'm cycling. I have it in one of my sump compartments, and it seems to work fine. I'm using fairly small grain size Marineland carbon, and relatively low flow. The only drawback is that the carbon...

    Cost for Your SW Setup

So, based upon all the posts in this thread, it would appear one should be able to calculate the optimum size aquarium in gallons based upon complexity level (budget - moderate - high end). I may develop a mathamatical formula with graphs to illustrate this point the next time I'm bored to...

    Aquarium photography

What is the best way to photograph your aquarium and it's inhabitants? I have a 120 gal lit by 2x175w 10k MH and 1x 250w 20k MH. Everytime I photograph it, I get the reflection from the flash in the glass. Also, should one use a macro lens to photo up close. I have a 35mm SLR body and lens...

    carpet clean up :(

I have been taking a 3/4" oak cabinet grade plywood sheet, cutting it to compliment the footprint of my stand (i.e. My new 120 gal. is 2'x4', so I cut the plywood 3'x5'), and placed a raised edge around the entire perimeter of the sheet using 1.5"x 1/8" pine edging strips. I then stain it to...
