What do you feed you cichlids?

NLS Chiclid. Plus toss in a few blanched shelled peas and blanched green beans now and then.

    55 Gallon African Cichlid Tank

FYI, some of your links do not work.

    How much food?

Even a teaspoon is way too much. Just a pinch or two. 30 seconds. Two minutes is too long. Skip the auto feeder. They could go a week or more without feeding. Just turn off the lights. Don't overfeeding before you go.

    55 Gallon African Cichlid Tank

With a Pleco? Yes. With Africans? No. I can attest to this with personal experience.

Will a Pleco 'fit in' my Cichlid Community?

Common plecos can grow to 1-2 feet ( yes, feet). A bristlenose pleco grow to 4-5 inches.

Will a Pleco 'fit in' my Cichlid Community?

I agree but both of these species get too big for that tank.

    Cleaners with Cichlids?

They come in all shapes and sizes. I have a featherfin myself. BTW I had a CAE in with my Malawis and they killed it.

    Cleaners with Cichlids?

I would suggest an appropriately sized Syno over a Pictus. The Syno is more robust. Pictus may work, but it's somewhat of a gamble. I've read where Cichlids may eat the eyes out of Pictus.

    clean up crew options

Sorry I'm late to the party, but +1 on Bristlenose Pleco for algae control. Of course, fish and left over food waste are only controlled with proper filtration and water flow.

    Mbuna tank

I wonder if there are toxins that could leach after time.

    Mbuna tank

Ah. I overlooked that. I guess "Seal all around it and add sand to if it you want to try to make it blend in with the things you already have in your tank." confused me, but you meant seal it with the paint/quickcrete mix, right? I would think that the concrete would sap the acid from the...

    90 gallon tank with canister

I agree completely with garfy. However, I have seem plenty of folks who swear by overstocking. The downside to overstocking (besides the squabbling) is this: No matter how much filtration you add the end product of biological filtration is Nitrates, and filters to not effectively filter...

    Mbuna tank

Andy that looks great. Did you really seal the whole thing with silicone? Doesn't it look glossy?

    Mbuna tank

I included in the thread that I referenced my own technique for cleaning rocks from the wild. Perhaps overkill, but better safe than sorry.

    Mbuna tank

Here is an easy low-cost DIY option. Forgive me for drifting a bit in the thread, I was learning while I was doing it. The end-results worked great though. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f20/diy-rock-cave-grotto-204219.html

    Black or natural sand substrate??

I followed Convict's thread when he documented his switch to black sand and it has had one of the best results that I have seen.

    African Cichlids and Algae Wafers

If I want the Pleco to get any I have to put it in at night.

    Bristlenose Pleco

The bristles on the males are more prominent. There are actually several varieties of BNP, some have outright prehistoric-looking bristles.

    Bristlenose Pleco

Sorry for the reply to an old thread. Just a quick note to say that the BNP is awesome. It really adds a lot of character to the tank and is a workhorse after hours. If I turn on a remote room light early in the morning I can see him working away. I've had a lot of Plecos, but this one is...

    Turtles with Cichlids?

I was just going to reply to Andrew in my other post, but didn't want to derail my own thread. Can turtles go with Cichlids? What are the concerns?

    African Cichlids and Algae Wafers

What s hoot it is to toss an algae wafer in with my mixed Africans. You would think I thew a chicken leg into a tank of Piranhas. It's almost like an organized sport. They all grab it away when they are able to and then fly away trying to keep it away from the others. It goes on for several...

    Veggies

I notice that veggies are more messy than pellets. They also always seem to find their way to one of my filter intakes. Last night my EB Hap Ahli sucked in three whole peas at once! It couldn't even get it's mouth closed. It finally realized it's limit and ejected two of them, then gagged...

    Veggies

The other day I made a batch of fresh unseasoned green beans I set a few aside and froze them in a small container, figuring I would thaw out and toss in one every now and then for my Bristlenose Pleco. My Mbuna don't really pay too much attention to them after everyone has had a taste of them...
