Advice re Ich in Community Tank

Three of my five silver hatchets have white spots. This is my first ich outbreak, and I've been reading all the posts on it, but I want to double-check the best treatment for my particular tank: silver hatchets (only ones with white spots right now) black neons von rio tetras albino corys...

    top level stocking ideas

Four hatchets are the minimum you would want. They are schooling fish and like to be in groups. Marble hatchets are pretty, but I also want to put a word in for silver hatchets. Some people say they're plain, but when the light hits them just right, they sparkle! They're a little larger...

    Yep, those are nerite eggs.

    My new 2 Silver Hatchetfish.

I love silver hatchetfish. I have had six of them for about eight months, although one died a few weeks ago (unknown reason). They definitely prefer to be in a group of 5-6 (or more). When kept in smaller numbers, they tend to become stressed. As you have already mentioned, they need to have a...

    Most Active Bottom 'Cleaner'?

Corydoras are wonderful fish; very active and fun to watch, but as rotorhead pointed out, they like to be in groups (4-5 minimum). For a 5-gallon tank, you would need to go with pygmy cories (i.e., habrosus)--other cories will be too big for your tank.

Complete newbie with a stupid question.

Welcome to the forum! I'm going to let someone else address the issue about stocking and how many goldfish can go in your tank. I do know that goldfish have a really large bioload so don't listen to the local fish shop (LFS) advice. I can help with the other questions: Leave the rings...

    Aggressive Top Feeders?

I want to disagree with the hatchetfish suggestion--they're very, very docile, and mine are slow-moving. I'm afraid they would get eaten alive (literally!) by your other fish.

    Feeding fish while on vacation?

As everyone else has said, your fish should be fine for three days. For a longer trip, I use a 7-day pill box, and I premeasure the amount of food I want my fish to have each day. My husband is willing to feed them, but he doesn't know anything about how much to give them. The pre-measured...

    QT tank question

I have a sponge filter running in my 29-gallon tank, in addition to the AquaClear filter. When I need a QT, I just move the sponge filter over to it. Other people keep a sponge or other piece of filter in their regular tank and transfer it to the QT--same concept.

    Frozen Blood Worms just sink

I crush the frozen bloodworm cube with a hammer (or knife handle, etc.) and immediately drop the bloodworms into the tank. As long as they're still frozen, they float for a moment or two, usually enough for my hatchetfish to get a few on the surface, and then tetras catch them as they float down.

    newbie from near nashville tn

Welcome! I'm from near Nashville myself. There are some pretty good deals on Craigslist in Nashville, although you need to make sure it really is a good deal (sometimes items are ridiculously priced), and you'll want to clean any items really well before setting them up. Have you...

Thinking about starting a small tank as a gift

I agree with Ocean. First, make sure that your relative wants the tank. Will he/she be expected to feed the fish daily, do the waterchanges, keep up maintenance, etc., or are you planning on doing all of that for them? I've always heard that you never give someone a pet as a surprise...

pugmom's 29 gallon community build (newbie)

Patience, PugMom! :o) New tanks are so exciting. Have you soaked or boiled your driftwood? That will help to reduce the tannins that leach into the water, although I actually like the lightly colored water from the tannins. It looks very natural. P.S. As a "mom of pugs" myself, I...

    Aquaclear Filter Media

+1 on substituting polyfil in place of the carbon. It's cheap and easy to rinse out, but it's a great place for beneficial bacteria to hang out.

What do you like the most about this forum?

I love the interesting information. Even when the posts are about fish/plants I don't have (yet), I feel like I'm learning. I also like that most people are extremely patient and helpful, even when the same questions have been asked a million times. I also like that the posts are "readable"...

    Blood fin tetra

So right now, they're in a tank with a betta? I'd definitely return them asap. If they tend to be as nippy and fast as you say, it's only a matter of time before they attack the betta. With his flowing fins, I'm afraid he won't stand a chance.

    Filter pad

You can find the polyfil batting at any store that sells sewing/quilting supplies or you can find it from an online craft/sewing store.

A happy surprise--a baby albino cory!

Tonight I found a baby albino cory in my 27-gallon tank. The tank has driftwood and is pretty heavily planted so there are lots of good hiding places. There have been quite a few eggs around the tank, but I'm surprised that any of them survived long enough to hatch. So here are my questions...

    Which filter?

I like the AquaClear, too. It's affordable, and there are no expensive filter media to buy. I use the sponge that comes with it, some polyester quilt batting (in place of the carbon), and ceramic rings. Although I have only had my tank set up for 6 months or so, the filter has proven reliable...

    New Starter - Goldfish

Actually, I think you said you have not added the fish yet, right? I'm still too new to answer your question about what is going on with the murky water, but you might find your answer--and other helpful information--in the article on "fishless cycling" The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to...

    Fin rot???

I'm betting that the shark is the culprit, too. LyndaB is right--you need a much larger tank for it.

    Homemade food?

I made some food that was supposed to be for nerite snails--Ha! They never touch it, but my cory cats love it! The recipe started with a small jar of baby food (green peas or green beans), and to that I added one packet of unflavored gelatin. I mixed the two together in a small bowl, and then...

    Best Gravel for Cory Cats?

Disclaimer: My tank has only been set up for 6 months, but I use a medium size very-smooth natural-looking gravel (I think it's marketed as "river stones." I have 7 albino cories, and so far, I haven't noticed any wear on their barbels. All 7 eat well and are growing. Whether you use sand or...
