    sw setup maintenance costs

I just got a 75 gal that was previously sw. I'd like to use the fact that it still has sand in it as an excuse to venture into the world of sw. I'm not going to get it set up for a while b/c I need to save up for all the equipment (it sucks being a broke college student), but what I'm worried...

    Stripping paint off tank

So I just bought a 75 gal and the previous owner painted the back and one of the sides with blue paint. I'd like to strip it off and was hoping someone might have some advice so that I don't end up poisoning the fish that will eventually go in the tank. TIA!

    No Algae - Prob?

My 40 gal has been cycled for nearly 4 months now. I have 6 rosy barbs (1.5"), 5 zebra danios (1.5"), and two neon tetras (1"). (Used to have more fish but they got eaten.) Anyway, I have some java moss growing in there and that's all. The only light I have on it is from a 10 gal hood but the...

    cycling and nitrate levels

I'm on my third day of cycling my 40 gal. Right now the ammonia is 0ppm, nitrite is .25ppm and nitrate is at least 10ppm (color is between 10 and 20ppm). Isn't it supposed to take forever for nitrate to show up? Is it possible to have too much nitrate in a tank? Are the nitrite levels dangerous...

    Fish and water compatibility

I'm starting up some new tanks and was wondering whether or not I'm going to have to doctor up my water for any of these species. My pH is 7.8 and dGH is 11. I was thinking about the following: Neon tetras Dwarf gouramis Trichogaster trichopterus (3 spot gourami) T. leeri (Pearl gourami)...

    Liquid Gravel Vac

Anyone used this stuff? It's supposed to be aerobic heterotrophic bacteria that eats uneaten fish food and waste, etc. Apparently, if you use it you only have to vacuum your gravel once or twice a year. Too good to be true?

    Blacklights

I've noticed that pet stores often carry blacklight sensitive decorations. I am under the impression that blacklights are the same as UV lights. UV light exposure is bad for humans so wouldn't it be bad for fish, too?

    AquaClear 500

I've hear that when it comes to filtration more is better. Is an AC 500 too much for a 40 gal tank?

    Gravel question

Long story about my 40 gal, but it's basically a new tank setup. I've found a great LFS and the owner has been a lot of help. The thing is, he got me a 50 lbs bag of gravel and I'm wondering if maybe it's too much gravel for my tank. It's going to be planted (not too heavily, but not sparsely...
