White "lashes" on scales and fins

Thanks Fawn! I'm going to have to look close when I get home, the things I saw did not appear to be forked or fuzzy - more like a pure white whisker or eyelash. It's been recommended that I pull them off and treat the site with melafix... Yes, I know the tank is small, I started out just...

White "lashes" on scales and fins

I was hoping someone might recognize these white things on my common goldfish - they just came up, seemingly overnight . . . What type of fish is afflicted? 4" common goldfish (tankmate has no signs) what is wrong with the fish to the best of your ability She has white things that look like...

Pics of my New 10 gallon..(newbie)

DrsFoster&Smith has three types of mini compact fluorescents. I have two of the All-Glass bulbs, which I find to shed a bit of a blue light. I might try the Coralife Colormax next time. The catalogue says 10 watts c.fluor. is equivalent to 50 watt incandes. I think any of these would benefit...

Pics of my New 10 gallon..(newbie)

Nice job Anthony! What kind of lighting do you currently have? I don't know about plugging in additional plant grow lights, but if you currently just have incandescent lights you could replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs. My lfs doesn't have them but drsfoster&smith.com has them online.

How long does a "cycling" take?

Sorry, Presence but I just went to that site and it wasn't available. I'll see what else I can find. Okay the link didn't work but the article is there if you go to fishprofiles.com, then go to FAQ, then nitrogen cycle.

How long does a "cycling" take?

It varies but usually between 30 and 40 days. Check out www.fishprofiles.met/faq/begin-cycling.asp It shows cycling-over-time. Having good filter material for the bio-bugs to inhabit might affect the time it takes.

    Really silly question

I love naming my fish, and the best part of fish naming is fish name changing, which I do a lot of too. I've changed girl names to boy names, baby names to grown-up names, fish colored names to whatever color the fish changes into names ... all without causing the fish any confusion (well, as...

    10 gal suggestions?

I have 5 serpae tetra in my 10g. They were schooling at the fish store, but now I only see them school while I'm cleaning their tank. They bunch up at night but otherwise they kinda hang out separately and only minimally chase after each other. They're vibrant little guys and I love 'em!

    tubifex cubes

I pull the tubifex cube into pieces and soak for just a minute, pushing it down into a little dish of water until its saturated. A couple of the chunks I can feed directly to my 2 goldfish. Another chunk I pull apart with my fingers under the water (yes, yuck) to separate all the little worms...

Air pumps..any quiet ones out there?

I have two Rena airpumps and they are quieter than anything else I've tried. I wonder if I hung them if they'd make any more noise than the bubbles do! I seem to have enough air bubbles too.

fishless cycling - i think i used the wrong ammonia

I know it would slow you down, but since you've got no fish in there you could dump and rinse everything thoroughly and start over, to be on the safe side.

WTB: 40 to 55 g. set up near Atlanta

I am interested in any tank between 40 and 55 gallons, the whole set up would be nice but tank only or tank and stand only is okay too. Would pick-up in any part of North Georgia. Please send e-mails to: arichards@abcobuilders.com Thank you

Another Newbie needs help with Fishless Cycling :-)

The guidelines I used called for getting the ammon. up to approx. 5 ppm, I think this will get your nitrites going. I had my nitrates rise early and unexplainedly too, but it didn't seem to have any effect in the end, I just did a big water change when the ammon. & nitrites went to zero and the...

    Tiny tetra mouths to feed

I'm not sure I understand, vega. No flake until they're 1", or no frye food because they are 1"? The flake I've put in has some small pieces, but they seem to put those in their mouths and then spit them out again, like maybe they're too hard or something. But if I soak the flakes first, they...

    Tiny tetra mouths to feed

Thanks y'all! I couldn't find the micropellets at my 2 lfss anyway, so it would have to be ordered, maybe when they're a little bigger. I'll look for the Frye Bytes. In the meantime, last night I soaked part of a tubifex worm cube and poured those little worms in... they seemed to go crazy over...

    Tiny tetra mouths to feed

I've just become the proud parent of a little school of 5 serpae tetras, all about 1" long. (My first tropicals!) They reside in a 10g tank set up and cycled just for them, nothing else. My concern is that most of the food I bought for them seems too big for their mouths! I bought them some...

    What fish with goldies?

Goldfish officianados (I'm not one but I listen to them alot) would say do not keep any other kinds of fish with goldfish. The goldfish will either nip or be nipped. Keep fancies together or commons together but its not even recommended to keep fancies and commons together! If anyone...

    question on fishless cycling

The following site has a graph that I found useful to follow. My numbers didn't fit exactly, but the trends were there, with the exception of nitrate which shot up pretty fast and stayed there. www.fishprofiles.net/faq/begin-cycling.asp

    question on fishless cycling

I kind of figure the sword plants I put in to be sacrificial, they look pretty bad now...in my case probably adding to the detritus more than utilizing any nutrients or such. I think you should work on getting a bigger nitrite spike by keeping up the ammonia supplementation, then, like TankGirl...

    question on fishless cycling

thartley, I just finished my first fishless cycle on a 10g. My numbers were a bit different, but it worked, so I thought we might compare. I started by adding approx. 6.6ml clear ammonia, which brought my ammon. readings up to between 5 and 6 ppm. I added this amount every day, my nitrite...

    rosy barbs in a 10g?

I was given a 10 gal. set-up and just completed a fishless cycle (took 16 days, thanks for all the info. I found here) I really really wanted to put in a school of neon rosy barbs - nothing else - but some say they are too big or that is too many for a 10g. (Or is it that a 10g. is too small for...
