    Angels Breeding?

    FWA, are they still eating?

    Angels Breeding?

The rationale behind water changes is not just about water purification (ie - removing nitrates from the water). A cold water change simulates the seasonal temperature changes which they would experience in their natural habitat. That is partly what stimulates the pairs to breed, as long as...

    Angels Breeding?

I really don't pay attention to temperature drops when I do a water change, but a 10 percent change drops the temperature safely and temporarily enough to stimulate spawning for my breeding pairs. Your female is definitely ready.

    Angels Breeding?

I usually do a water change to stimulate spawning. Angelfish respond to changes in temperature. This is assuming everything else is good.

    Angelfish eggs

I'm sorry to read about your angelfish fry. It is difficult to tell exactly what caused them to die from what you wrote. I've had unexpected fry deaths, too, without being able to explain why it happened. I like to keep the newly hatched fry in a relatively small tank (1-2 gallons) if they...

    Discus Eggs help

I am saying this with all seriousness. Just let nature take its course, and hope you have good parents. Parent nurturing is essential for discus breeding. If you have to hatch them artificially, you are talking about a lot of work to feed the fry as they become free swimming. I really don't...

    Are these eggs?

I have never seen angelfish eggs bunch up like that, so I would tend to agree that they were cory eggs. As far as angelfish are concerned, sometimes after laying the eggs, the parents may decide to move them (or the developing fry) to a safer location. It happens to me all the time, especially...

Angelfish Eggs.. now what to do?

I am currently breeding solely angelfish, and I do both parent-raised and artificial hatching depending on the situation. You can expose angelfish eggs to the air for a short period of time, like to transfer from one tank to the other, without harming them. I do it all the time. It should go...

    Discus experts here?

I have never thought pH was an issue with discus, with the exception of breeding, and with tank bred discus, even that is not an issue unless you have an unusually high pH. When I started doing discus, it was in Omaha, Nebraska, where we had hard water and a pH in the high 7s. But the fish...

    Water Pump Died

    Hmmmm........good advice. Thank you!!

    Water Pump Died

Thanks, Sniperhank!! This is a 24 gallon nano cube. There's still a slight oil smell. Do you think a 5 gallon change a day should do it until I get rid of the smell completely or until the corals respond? As I mentioned before, the fish (two tomato clowns) are doing fine so the tank is not...

    Water Pump Died

The water pump servicing the return on my nano cube died. Usually not a big deal, but a freak thing happened. Based on the smell of the tank and the behavior of the corals (the fish are doing fine), I am thinking that oil from the sealed portion of the pump leaked into the tank. I never in a...

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

Wow, Crazy Dave, I'd be interested in seeing a picture of your 4 gallon vase. Sounds like an interesting project.

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

I'm sorry, that was the original question you posed. My bad. I didn't read the thread very carefully.

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

Very true. Which is why sand or peat is not recommended for undergravel filters.

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

That's the way I understand it. The gravel is where the beneficial bacteria that make the filtration work are. The filtration may work without the gravel, but you won't have as much filtration surface.

    Easiest breeding fish (NON-livebearer)?

My vote is for convict cichlids. Excellent parents.

    Oscars

Sounds like typical cichlid behavior. As long as there is no physical damage to either fish, you should be fine.

    Biocube and heat issues.

I really had no desire to buy a cube. I was looking through a garage sale, and the guy was selling it and the stand for $25. At that price, you feel almost obligated to buy it. :)

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

I think it's a good idea. I'm about to remove the top off my nano cube because it's running way too hot. I plan on replacing it with a clip on lighting solution, but I haven't decided what yet.

    Biocube and heat issues.

The heat issue with these cubes drives me crazy. It's the only thing I don't like about them. I have been leaving my top cracked open to manage the heat, but I am still getting temps in the 79-80 range, which is okay so far.

Do I HAVE to have a filter?

Your live rock will be your primary biological filtration, so you won't need a filter. Of course, do not overstock with fish or overfeed. I have been doing a 24 gallon nano, and it has two small tomato clownfish. I didn't use any filters, and it has been doing very well.
