Because your using diy you may not even need to run air Just make sure you have a good amount of surface agitation and thats usually enough. You can run air but it all depends on how effective your diy is. What size is the tank?

Actually try looking into dosing flourish excel at higher levels ive heard some algaes dont like this. That would mean you dont have to blackout the tank. Cutting down you potoperiod slightly might help

You could try dosing co2 tablets to keep the levels up as a temporary measure. ive personally never had any serious issue with algae(touch wood) so hopefully someone who has can give you some info
