In my 10gal I used play sand and I have a black background. I didn't think it looked very good until I got the plants in there. I love the way it looks.

Thank you for the reply. I really don't know anything about the fish you are talking about. Could you give me some examples please. I will try to look them up if I have some time later today.
Thank you for the quick reply. I was thinking about having some shrimp in there. I have a five gallon with some as well as a betta. The betta has left them alone for about a year now. As far as lighting on the ten gallon I replaced the lights that came with the hood with two daylight cfls. Did...
I just got a new 10gal tank set up and am cycling. I am looking for a few ideas on what to stock in it. I will have live plants and CO2. Thank you in advance.
I've read that it can be either partially or fully submerged. I have no experience with it though. After checking out liveaquaria. The description says the same as well.
I have a 5 gal I bought at Wal Mart for $20. Pretty good. Easy to clean and the filter it came with works pretty well. I had to swap out the bulb since I have plants. My Betta loves it. Had to make a baffle out of a water bottle so he doesn't get pushed around. I recommend it.
I've had success with ember tetras. My betta is an oddball though. He will school with them sometimes. I also have snails. The baby ones he will swim up to look at then leave alone. Just depends on the temperament of the betta.
According to their website it is legal to breed them for educational purposes and for personal purposes only. You can't sell or barter(trade)them. It says nothing about giving them away. Putting a patent and trademark on a fish is ridiculous. Might as well do that with a mule or turkey.
I like it since it will catch any gunk or help with overflow. That and you can tell if there is pressure from that to the tank. More of a piece of mind I guess since I don't have to look in my filter. I have it diffusing through that rather than a diffuser in the tank.
Maybe try a smaller jar for the bubble counter. I have a 2L bottle that goes into a small glass mustard jar. It seems like it's not getting enough pressure to leave that second bottle. That's what it sounds like anyway.
I have 5 Ember Tetras in my tank. The first day they kind of hid in the plants. The next day they were all over but schooled together. Every so often they go two and three here and there but they stay together for the most part. How many will depend on the size of your tank and other(if any)...
Quikrete Play Sand. That's what I have used. You just have to rinse it really, really well. You can pick that up at most hardware stores. Also like what was mentioned if you get the PFS. Just depends on what you like.
Some of the parts of my Rose Sword have gotten quite long. I was going to trim it and let the shorter ones grow for this tank. Could I replant the longer ones I trim off in a larger tank?
My plants have grown really well in the sand so far with the root tabs. I am waiting to see how well the DIY Co2 works. There are a lot of types of sand. Some people have some really nice planted gravel tanks as well. Just personal preference I suppose.
I'm using playground sand in mine and I just set up a DIY Co2 system. It was pretty easy. The sand took a bit to rinse out though. It's not too difficult to get started.
Well, thank you for answering the questions. It gives me some direction to go. Yours was one of the first threads I saw when I joined this forum and I am very impressed. It has been a lot of inspiration.
