    Pistol Shrimp

I purchased a banded prawn goby and a pistol shrimp today and i heard the pistol shrimp are great sand stirrers but i cannot believe how much he has done in so little time. Within minutes i saw what looked like an explosion in the back of my 29G reef and dusty material went everywhere. After...

    Button Polyps

R.O. water is supposedly stripped of almost everything right? So where would i get all of my trace elements from? Or are those left in there still? I used to use tap water and got hair algae really bad but since the R.O. change a year ago it's been great. I plan on changing my bulb soon, not...

    Button Polyps

I recently grabbed some purple and green button polyps that looked nice at the store. They were open later that day at home but have since closed up and not opened. All of my other zoos and polyps are open and doing good. I have a 29g with a coralife 65watt 50/50 power compact on it. I have the...

Quarantine and acclimation for coral & inverts?

I would say the likelyhood that ich could stay alive in an environment without fish for the entire time until it gets from the LFS to you is impossible, that is unless your store keeps fish in the coral tank. Ich needs fish to survive. Ask how long the coral has been in the tank at the store...

Hard White Dots on back of tank

i had thought snail eggs cuz i did have one baby snail in there. Only snail i ever had was a mexican turbo snail. I've had them in all of my tanks so far. These look though like little spiral shaped pure white dots that are in clusters at times. They sorta look like the @ symbol in a way...

Hard White Dots on back of tank

All 3 of my tanks have these little white hard rocky type things stuck to the back of the tanks and some on the sides. They look circular in their shape sort of like a shell but they are really stuck on hard and i can only get them off with a razor blade. any idea what these are?

What are the Blankets of algea

Maybe i shouldnt be doing this but i've always been told and used a very very small dosage of maracyn. Killed it dead in a few days. It will come back though but very slowly. I do use tap water with phosguard in my filter as well. Anyone else use maracyn or heard of it?

    Snotty blob

Reminds me of Decaying pellet food i used to see in peoples oscar and jack dempsey tanks who over fed. It'd look like it was clear and fuzzy. Just an idea, could be something totally different entirely.

    Firefish Experience

I have a firefish as well as a green clown goby with red stripes. Clown goby does all the sitting. Sometimes he sits on my mushrooms but doesnt bother them.

how do you clean your test tubes?

Every fish store i've ever worked in bleaches them, and when they get real bad they use muriatic acid on them. a little overkill IMO.

    Pink Rose anemone

Got a new pink rose anemone as well as a second tomato clown for my tank. I noticed that shortly after about say an hour the tomato was playing in the anemone while the anemone was eating some krill, and the tomato seemed to flicker as if he was stung. I know they don't sting them but is it...

    I want crabs ...

I've seen a few red leg hermits in my tank playing too close to the polyps and stuff. are they supposed to not be reef safe? I know sally's and emeralds are ok but maybe i'm wrong with the red legs? I too have caulerpa in my tank but after reading that i'm taking it all out in the morning and...

    Sleeper banded goby/dragon goby

I've seen everywhere that dragon gobies are reef safe. I recently added some corals to the tank and i see him nipping on xenia and my mushrooms. is he going to continue nipping on them like this or is this ok for him to do? I have heard that they can cover up corals and bury them as well.

    white stuff on emerald crab

Now that you mention molting, it looked like the same type of stuff i had seen on sponge crabs. Probably molting. I hadn't even thought of that. It did fall off of him shortly after letting him crawl around in the bucket with some water. Thanks!

    LFS Advice vs. Web Forums

Working in a LFS i find that the people who have been in the business for excess of 20 30 years are the hardest to change in ideas. I've worked at a few different ones including a retail chain. The chains really are after your buck and i don't blame anyone for staying away. I can tell you...

    white stuff on emerald crab

snagged a free emerald crab off the live rock shipment from the store. He has some large white cottony stuff attached to its back legs. is this like its baby eggs or is this some fungus i should clean off?

    OUTRAGED by LFS

I was sort of brought in by the movie as well. i worked in a retail chain pet store selling FW fish and got roped into seeing the movie by my gf. After that i wanted to start my first tank and decided i'd have to be a moron to screw up a FW tank so i went straight to SW FO and now onto corals...

    OUTRAGED by LFS

I work in a LFS and we have carried alot of fish that i myself personally would not choose to order. Ordering isn't my job, but the people that do the ordering seem to like to order alot of coral eating butterflies and such. It really aggravates me when i see a pakistani butterfly in a 20L...

    Bio wheel filter?

I had always thought that the bio-wheels were meant to do the same as bio-balls in a wet/dry. Is it that the wheel collects too much gunk on it to build nitrate problems? I thought the wheel is supposed to convert ammonia, nitrite etc.. into nitrate, or am i wrong?

    Sleeper Goby/Dragon Sifter

Thanks for the info. I had read that clown gobies and dragon sifters are not totally reef safe in this marine fishes book that i seem to see in ever fish store i go into. I'm starting to wonder if the info is really reliable in it. I found it online here...

    Sleeper Goby/Dragon Sifter

I've had a dragon goby for awhile in my tank, and i was thinking of adding some soft corals. I've read some books that say that they will nip at the polyps and do harm to them, and some other websites i read say that they are totally reef safe. Anyone know or have experience with sifter gobies...

    Chalk Bass with large eye

Had a friend of mine that is very up on his disease identification take a look at the clown and he says that it is something close to lateral line erosion and said just to spoil him with good food and vitamins. Any advice on how to rapidly kill Ich in a tank without any fish without destroying...

    Chalk Bass with large eye

Chalk bass's eye has almost completely healed itself. Still slightly protruding but it doesnt have that huge bubble over it anymore pushing it out. Clown is acting abit better but still has very faint white lines. Dosing with maracyn again today.

    Chalk Bass with large eye

I have determined that it must be some sort of bacterial infection with the maroon clown. I have him in a QT tank at work with the other 2 damsels who show no signs of ich or such, but i just wanted to be safe that there is no ich in the tank. I had treated with copper power about a month ago...
