I just thought I'd update this thread... After some research I found out that this strain is commonly called 'nigeria yellow'. Still haven't been able to find out much else. I'm assuming they will grow to the same size as a regular krib. I'll post more pics later but they are really coloring up...

It's a 55g. It has two separate fixtures. On closer inspection the tubes i currently have are "power-glo" 15w t8. Does the t8 mean it's a full spectrum light?

That's good to know. At what size can I tell male from female?

Since they will likely be juveniles when I buy them i won't be able to tell male/female. But when they mature should I stick with one male and a few females? Are the males aggressive with each other?

For now it's in a 55g with a fire mouth and blue acara. In June I'm upgrading to a 90 and will decide at that point who will go where. Can I do a group of 4-5 in the 55g and house the acara and firemouth in the 90g?

My lfs has some too. Only about an inch long though. They are listed at 16.99 each. Is that a good price? I only got one but am thinking about getting another 2.

I've had a fire eel (about 6" long) for almost a month now. The tank it was in at the lfs was bare with a thick bed of course gravel and all the eels had buried themselves. My tank has sand substrate with lots of rocks, driftwood and general cover for the eel. Could this be why it won't bury...

If I had to guess I'd say the 1st pic is a male and the 2nd is female. A good pic showing the fins would make it easier to tell. Do either of them show colour on their belly?

+1 for a firemouth. I like jack dempseys as well but a 55g might not be a forever home as they do get big, but if you get it as a juvi you'd have some time to watch it grow and mature before you have to make the call as to whether or not to keep it in the 55g.

Looks good!! I just switched to sand myself. Have you decided what kind of sand to use? I've heard many different opinions but I used regular play sand it it turned out great. It just takes a long time to clean. Good luck!
