Hi, thanku for replying and apologies for my late reply. I have a all sand substrate in a 90L tropical tank. No ferts or carbon source. I don't have any experience in keeping plants and I would like some advice in keeping low maintenance plants alive. Ill attatch a pic of my tank.

My sister has a 35L tropical tank and has a massive problem with algae (see pic). I remove it and it comes back really quickly. Is there anything I can do to keep it at bay?

Here's my tank as it is at the moment. The Fish in it are not being kept though. I'm thinking some tall plants behind the rocks and maybe a picture background. Can anyone help with plants, stocking or any other ideas? Cheers Matt Che

Thanks for your thoughts. How much do you recommend changing and when? Its approx 12L. And at the risk of sounding stupid, how would the whole process work? How can the beneficial bacteria build up without a filter and with more water changes?

I left mine soaking for a month and a half and never had any problems. Granted I had to wait all that time but just changed the water every few days to start with and reduced amount as time went on. Soon came round and water in my tank hasn't suffered.
