Seasoning Filter to Help New Tank

How long should I leave a filter in my tank to season it with BB before I use it to help kickstart a cycle in the tank I'm setting up across town for a friend? I have some blue filter floss set up downstream from a well seasoned filter plate inside my current filter to get it ready to...

    Planted 55, 100% fake!

Here is another 55 I've done. 'Planted' with artificials. Not one real plant in the tank. I used to do big planted tanks but don't have much time for maintenance, yet still want nice green aquariums, so I went the fake plant route and enjoy it. Two 20" 5000K White LED strips from Ebay...

    I Don't Heat My Tanks.....

Currently the temp in my 55 and my 29 is 61-63 degrees, the same temp as the house. I keep it cool in here in Winter. It goes to about an average of 74 in summer and fluctuates anywhere from 73 to 80 in one day. I stopped heating in the summer as always, and then never turned them back on, so...

What lights are you using on your 40B?

Or any other 3 foot tank. I've been trying to find a 36" shop light and of course, the most common 48" is all I can find. I may just have to get a twintube light from Marineland, but usually their 36" lights have 24" bulbs in them which I don't want. Any ideas?

Petco Dollar Sale On Again till Oct 20

Yup, they just ended one two weeks ago or so and here comes another one. Finally I was able to get there and snatch up a 40B before the reptile folks cleaned them out like they normally do. Now I have a 20L, 10 from the last sale and a 40B from this one. Oh the possibilities. :fish2:

San Francisco Bay Brand Frozen Foodsor other frozen food packs

Does anyone here use them? Do you like the results with your fish? I'm always trying to vary the diet I feed all my fish (mixed tropicals, shrimp) and thought maybe one of the large 2 lb packages may work well for that purpose along with my other foods. Anyone used this large multi pack...

    Amanos = Snail Control?

Had my four Amano shrimp for a few weeks in my "Love It or Hate It Tank", and they are doing great. They mill around on some of the algae and also grab any extra items of food and pellets. Today, I notice one munching on something new. A nice round gelatinous mass. And he wasn't letting go of...

    Takashi Amano Aquarium Series

I can't be the only one that has watched this short series of him building two tanks in Tokyo. They look amazing on my TV when I use the You Tube app on it. Way better than watching on a computer. Ep 1 TAKASHI AMANO × SUMIDA AQUARIUM Vol.1 - YouTube Ep 2 TAKASHI AMANO × SUMIDA AQUARIUM Vol.2...

    How Long Do You Look?

How much time do you spend each day just watching your fish? Not cleaning, water testing or maintenance. How much time do you really spend just sitting and watching them do their thing? I can see one tank from my chair, and that gets stared at for about 45 minutes a day. My other tank...

Black Skirt Tetras breeding on their own

Watching my Black Skirt tetras this morning, they are definitely breeding. The male is shimmying up against the female and each time he does it, she drops some clearish eggs. As she drops them, they both turn around and try to eat them. Some have gotten away, so maybe I'll see some fry. Or...

    Coolest Aquarium Ornaments

Yes, the "coolest" is a matter of opinion. I'm thinking of tank #3 and am browsing the web for ideas and themes. If you've seen my all artificial "planted" tank or freshwater coral tank, you know I like stuff that's different. What are the neatest aquarium safe decorations or ornaments you've...

The Love it or Hate it Tank

Here goes, this is tank #2 after being out of the hobby for a long time. Some of you have seen my 55: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f70/first-new-tank-in-almost-a-decade-freshwater-217171.html I decided I wanted another tank, not as big, for just a few fish. I love the look of reef...

    Aqueon Warranty Dept?

So far, not impressed with service, but holding out hope. I have all Aqueon tanks, one Aqueon filter, and heater (got those last two in a deal) and just bought an Aqueon Water Changer because somehow I lost my Python. Seriously, I can't find 50 feet of hose with bright green ends. I think it...

    Giant Danios

I have no idea how folks catch these on film. Mine are so busy playing around and chasing random micro bubbles from the filter output that it's nearly impossible to get a shot. Anyway, after a long hiatus from fish keeping, I set up my 55, and have finally added fish. My first fish had to...

    Most Colorful Non-Cichlids

What are the most colorful non-cichlids for a tank? List any you know of. Size, water types, compatibility can be worried about later. I just want colorful fish ideas right now, then will narrow stuff down. I can think of the Buenos Aires Tetra, being a favorite of mine, but mind block won't...

    Craigslist Good Finds

We have a funny thread about Craigslist Insanity. Let's have one about good stuff you bought and sweet deals you found either Craigslist or local, garage sales, ebay, etc. I went this week and picked up a 29, top (Stow A Lite oldy) , iron old fashioned stand, and box of "misc" from a local...

First New Tank In Almost a Decade, Freshwater

First New Tank In Almost a Decade, 55 Got out of indoor fish for quite some time, been working on outdoor ponds, waterfalls, bamboo features. Got a wild hair about setting up a tank again, so I dug everything out and got to it recently. Like riding a bike, you never forget how. 55 gallon...
