Bettas: Tail-biting or fin rot? how to tell

When an otherwise healthy betta has some parts of his tail looking shredded or missing, what are the signs that help us know if he is self-mutiliating it vs. an outside infection causing the damage?

    Aqua Clear Filters on Amazon

I know you changed your mind but in any case, I got my new aqua clear 70 from amazon this week, set it up today and it's working perfectly! I would go through amazon again. By the way it was thicker than expected but hey, I should have known. I have it mounted on the side of my 29g as I have...

well(tap)water full of nitrates... best option for WC?

Thank you BBradbury!! I only have anubias and cryptocoryne, although there are quite a few of these. I will grab some anacharis next time I visit a lfs. My tank is over stocked unfortunately as I was recently given two 4" clown loaches, so I will up the volume of my weekly WC's and try adding...

    Something coming out of log.....

hmmmm I very vaguely remember hearing about this stuff leeching from some driftwood when I was soaking my own pieces of driftwood for the first time. I never had this issue myself but if I were you I would set up a tub (tupperware or bucket) and keep soaking this piece so it isn't in your main...

well(tap)water full of nitrates... best option for WC?

I live in an agricultural valley (Watsonville CA) and my well water recently tested 60-80ppm for nitrates. I have to do WC's on 2 tanks and want to know if store bought RODI is ok to use I prefer this to 1-2 gallon drinking water (spring, distilled etc) for the price but need to know what the...

    Fish ID

super awesome!! Thanks so much, I'll do some research on the SAE. The lfs owner called it an algae eater but that seemed vague when I got home and was curious. I can snap another pic during the day tomorrow if the SAE description doesnt feel right :)

why is it so hard to get help? please anybody

I appreciate it guys, I think I was having a panic attack earlier, I really love this site. I have all these new fish from a close-out sale at my lfs and I over-commited a bit with 4 large loaches, livebearer fry and a lack of filtration for these new additions. I also tested my well water...

    29 & 20L: out-of-biz sale livestock help

That is a very interesting tip guys, I run it when I am not sleeping bc it is in my bedroom so perhaps it will work better in my 29 which is located in my art studio. My main concern w/ both tanks was the under-filtration issue with all these new fish. I had only the betta in the 20 (was a...

    29 & 20L: out-of-biz sale livestock help

thanks a million Dallas! Why do you think the Platies should go into the 29 vs the 20? any aggression w/ my betta? or just bc of filtration? The "algae eater" is def not a pleco. here is a link to a pic I just snapped of him...

why is it so hard to get help? please anybody

I have been a member for 2 years, yet I still don't understand why I cannot get any responses to (non-social blah-blah-blah type threads) for actual aquarium advice. 29 & 20L: out-of-biz sale livestock help

ok turns out i have 28 platy fry! (bettaowner) I googled freshwater pipefish, amazing! any "swim bladder" recovery stories?

hello, I have a 3 year old betta male whom I love dearly who is on his 6-7th day of suffering from swim bladder disorder (a symptom of some other ailment, possibly overfeeding and another issue like parasites, in my estimation). I would love to hear the stories of any fish, particularly betta...

    Goby changing?

He could be maturing from juvenile to adult, not a bad guess. Look at gobies online to find a similar one and find out his species. Try LiveAquaria.com and you can read up on the details of that species
