any advice for maintaining a "stable" environment for shrimp?

Ok, I was thinking babies may have been eaten but obviously not then. All cherries I have had breed like rabbits in all my tanks. One thing I would say is do water changes, not just top up evaporation, as you are only adding more minerals, not taking any away, which will push up the hardness...

any advice for maintaining a "stable" environment for shrimp?

Water changes will only change the parameters of the tank if the new water isn't matched to the tank water. Cherries are pretty bullet proof anyway. It's the more sensitive shrimp you have to be more carefull with. Is there any fish in with the shrimp?

It was recommended by a lfs which I have recently learned knows about as much on heavily planted tanks as me! (NOT MUCH). The bba was on some plants I got from a friend. It doesn't seem to be growing...

Yeah. 4 hours on, half hour off, 4 hours on, 15 and a half off. Someone told me a break in the lighting period disrupts the algae growth

    advice on cycle please

It a 50lph small internal filter. It hasn't been running. I was going to put a little bit of old media in the filter then use the snails to spread the bacteria to the rest of the media and tank. All I need to know is if the snails produce enough ammoniw to do this

    advice on cycle please

I could do but I thought the snails would prefer 50% tank water and 50% declorinated tap water. I will work out the gallons quick.

    advice on cycle please

I mentioned old water because I thought the snails would prefer it to 100% declorinated tapwater. It's a very small tank. About a foot by about 10 inches, and there's quite a lot of snails

what is this black furry stuff??

If you add chemicals to get rid of it, STILL cut the light hours down to 6. If you don't rectify the problem then it will just come back. Adding chemicals is not really good for your aquarium anyway. Always rectify the problem first
