    Gourami identification

Definitely a gold gourami. Be cautious. They can be aggressive once they get larger.

    Angelfish eggs

I don't know what else lives in your tank, but I have two large angels who lay eggs regularly. The babies hatch, but I also have platys and a gourami who are crafty predators for the young. So far none have made it, but I don't really have room for another angel, boss I consider it 'live food'...

    Angelfish and Dwarf Gourami

I have two gourami's.....one Dwarf and one Blue 3-spot.....and two large angels together in my community 60-gallon. They all get along just fine! The only tensions are when the angels lay eggs, but they do that off in a corner so they just keep everyone away from that one corner.

    Stubborn high nitrates! Help!

Thanks, I'll give those suggestions a try. I'll probably start with even more plants, since they are a more natural solution. Id like to not try to play "Mother Nature" with chemicals if I can. I've never heard of the nitrate filter material but I'll try to find that too.I just wish I could...

    Stubborn high nitrates! Help!

Ok, I'll try to answer some questions, but I'm on my iPad so I can't see the original post while I type. I did use the API test kit, with the vials and droppers. Another confusing thing is that I tried using the dipsticks and got very different results. I've always been told they are...

Also, the tank has been running for almost 2 years.

    Stubborn high nitrates! Help!

I'm having problems getting my nitrates under control in my 60 gallon community tank. It's stocked with 2 medium Angels, 1 large blue Gourami, 2 Dwarf Gouramis, 1 Cremesicle Molly, and 8 platys. From what i can tell that isn't unreasonably stocked for a 60 gallon? I do weekly 30% - 40% water...

    Dark green algae problems......

Thanks for all the help.....the algae isn't brushy or fuzzy looking, just like a dark green/black looking coating on the plants. I don't see it on the gravel, rocks, or anything else...just the plastic plants. I havent tried putting the plants in bleach before, since I didn't know if that was...

    Dark green algae problems......

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have 2 Angels, both about the size of a raquetball in diameter, and a Blue Gourami about 3 1/2 inches. Do you think they would give the shrimps a hard time? Also, the plastic plants are about 24" tall and reach to the top of the tank. Would the shrimps climb...

    Dark green algae problems......

I've had my 60-gallon community tank running for quite a while now (going on 3 years), but in the last year or so I've seen a gradual increase in this algae that I just can't get rid of. It's not the usual green-colored algae that I've normally seen in other tanks.....it's a dark, dark...

    Powder blue Dwarf Gourami sick

I've had the same problem with different varieties of Dwarf Gouramis in my tank. First they hide in the plants, and they just start wasting away. I started looking around the internet, and found that many commercially bred Gouramis suffer from something called "iridovirus". Here is an article...

Goldfish in outdoor wine-barrel water garden

Yikes! Sounds more like Minnesota! I've been here for about 8 years, and so far the coldest winter was a couple years ago. The temps were down in the low teens. We havent had one like that in a while. I'm really looking into a heater for them....I just don't want to run the electric bill up...

Goldfish in outdoor wine-barrel water garden

I'm guessing it's around 30 or so, although it looks like more than that to me. A standard wine barrel is 59 gallons, and this one is basically one barrel cut in half.

Goldfish in outdoor wine-barrel water garden

So I've taken the advice of a neighbor, and created a watergarden on my front entry porch. Because I live in an area where mosquitoes are a problem....and also because I just enjoy the look of fish in a pond-like setting, I want to add some goldfish to the watergarden. I live in Maryland, and...

Craziness has ensued in my tanks!

I have a Leoprinus in my 55 gallon, and have had a similar problem between him and my large rainbow shark. In my case, they were having "spats" over hiding spaces and territories. I simply re-arrange the decor in my tank from time to time, when I see the tension rising, and this keeps the...

Is my UG filter causing my nitrates to be too high?

I have a question for some of the more experienced fish keepers out there. I have some experience with tanks, but mostly from when I was younger...20 years ago. Back then, I always used an undergravel filter. It was considered kind of a staple....it was standard. I've gotten back into fish...

    Dwarf gourami faded colors

I've recently posted about this same exact problem, and everyone instantly began asking about water parameters, etc., which is the normal first response. Mine were all within normal ranges....and no further solutions were offered. Then I started doing some intense internet research. I found...

    Are undergravel filters really effective?

I've got a little bit of experience with aquarium keeping....I had several when I was younger, and now have gotten back to having one...but I've always been in the habit of using the undergravel filters in them. I've noticed that it's rare to see the ugly lift tubes in aquariums anymore, and I'd...

    suggestions on tank mates

Really? I'm shocked! Mine shows very little aggression, and basically just swims around all day. Very active, but I haven't noticed any pestering or harassment of the other fish. I've heard of danger to slow moving fish, but all my tetras are A-OK.

    Elephant nose fish?

I've heard the same thing, that they need to live in a group, and they don't fair well alone. They get a sense of security from groups, and will be very stressed alone. Also my local fish expert says they should be given live foods like worm varieties and brine shrimp. It's hard to get them...

    Black banded leporinus

Mine hasn't nipped any in my tank, but I have other very active fish. I have a rainbow shark, some buenos aires tetras, Bloodfin tetras, and some serpae tetras in there now. I also have a large tank (60 gallon), which may help with the nipping. Overall he's been a great addition! I named him...

    Bullied Gourami

I had the same issue with my Gouramis in my 30-gallon tank. The problem is just like ejara said...the Gouramis are very territorial. Any time you have just a couple, they tend to fight a lot. I"ve heard of several solutions. 1-Get more gouramis, and they seem to fight less. I think it's...

Gourami troubles...orig posted in wrong category

Hopefully someone out there can help me here. I"m a relatively experienced freshwater tank keeper, but as of late, I'm having trouble keeping my Gouramis alive. I've always loved them....I've had Blues, Golds, Pearls, Dwarfs, Honeys, and Sunsets. I"ve always thought they were very attractive...

    suggestions on tank mates

I'd like to suggest a Banded Leproinus. I recently acquired one for my community tank and he's been a wonderful addition. They get to be about 6 inches or so, he's gotten along with all my other fish, and the coloration is bright and attractive (think a mix between bumble-bee colors and a zebra...

    Black banded leporinus

One more thing...all my research on these indicate that they get to be about 6-7 inches normally. A good, mid-sized, attractive fish!
