What about the petco black sand you have in your other tank. Personally I think that looks cool. I think the darker substrates make the plants stand out more, finished with a black background...everything pops.

I did look at it a while back but if I did go for C02 I think I'd go all in at get the full set-up. Funny thing is, my mates Dad runs a beer distributing company and I could get 6ft cylinders for free!!!
