what should I do?? how much water should I change

I recommend the ro water because if your tap contains your spikes (city changed something in the chemicals) then a water change with the same water will do good. I wouldnt worry about it not having enough minerals unless you are living with soft water. And in that case you probably ought to be...

    How long til airstone helps?

12 was a lot to add at once. Could be it spiked the ammonia and that is what killed them. Tests can be faulty from time to time. Did you acclimate them slowly?

I would do another 50% with RO water. You're tap water maybe coming in with those spikes.

Knife fish are amazing but very sensitive. I would hold off till I had the parameters on the tank firmly established. Research him as your main fish and look for appropriate tank mates. The clowns along can get well over a foot and are wide. After seeing a school of full grown loaches I would...

    Cheap Lighting

I got my 48" diamond plate reflector at Home Depot for $35.00. The high reflection is important because it focuses the light back on the tank, rather then letting it escape. My first hood had only the standard white and my growth was no good. The new reflector is starting to make co2 necessary

About to throw in the towel!

Test your water twice a day watch for ammonia spike and change water as needed. Might want to buy some bacteria starter to help out. You haven't changed your filter have you?

    Api Leaf Zone

Excuse me if I'm wrong. But I can't get your photo to pull up on my phone. Recollection is that you have only a small amount of plants that is far from heavily planted. Plus your tank has only been up a month. My bet if you tested your tank you would find you haven't finished cycling yet. It...

    Api Leaf Zone

Morgan listen to Rivercats and you won't go wrong. But since it sounds like you are determined to continue your experiment, I wish you luck. At 6 hours with 2 t8 65000 k bulbs with an awesome reflector I'm fighting algae still.

About to throw in the towel!

White cloudy water indicates bacterial bloom. Sounds like a mini cycle. Watch your water parameters daily as you will most likely spike ammonia next. Water chsnges as needed based on the daily tests

To Dirt or Not to Dirt...

How would that be if it's capped? Just curious since I've not experienced any issues so far and I'm not always good about making sure my hand is under the water.

    New Aquarium-looking for advice

You are on the right track with getting educated. Up your water changes to 50 percent a day. Get the api when you can. Leave the filter cartridge alone till you have cycled. If you don't have decor go get something because the BB will grow on that as well which will help later when you do change...

To Dirt or Not to Dirt...

I used organic soil from lowes and had enough to replant my house plants. Clay frim Michaels for 15 added to it as well for iron. But I don't think I added enough.

To Dirt or Not to Dirt...

I like my dirt for the most part. Cons: high nutrient more algae till it balances. Wish I would have done a dark cap and hidden the dirt on the edges with the cap. Pros: high nutrient my root feeders once established love it. I do rearange everything, except the swords, with no problem. And...

+1 what coursair said. Without a nutrient rich substrate you have to fertilize.

Wow! That is just disgusting! Our petco has the worst cust service which is so strange for this area. In fact most of the time they don't even turn the overhead lights on in the fish section. And good luck getting anyone to help you.
