    Ah...asterina starfish

I had a big wave of them at one point but now there's only a handful. Actually I've had waves of several different hitchhiker critters over the years. Not sure what caused them to recede but it wasn't anything I did willfully.

    Illuminous green on new rock

Some sort of algae; I know I had some grow on a similar piece of dry rock I put in my tank many years ago when it was first getting started. It faded away gradually as other life started to take hold.

    Derimming aquariums

You might be alright doing it to a 5g but generally the frame is a structural part of the tank and removing it could lead to failure later. But, if you wanna give it a go anyway, get a razor blade and slide it around under the frame inside and out. Also if you have a dremel tool or something...

    New filter. What to do?

I'd leave it for about a month then take some of the media out of the HOB and leave it running for another week or two. There's no penalty for taking even longer of course.

What is this growing under my frogspawn

I'd say some sort of sponge as well. With frogspawn new heads will form from the old ones. Basically each head will become elongated, then sort of a figure 8 shape, then eventually split in two.

90 gallon setup and stocking mission

I'm actually a big fan of going the other way with the stocking and getting a BIG school of something tiny like tetras. I love the look of a huge ball of tiny fish and I don;t really see it done too often. Most big tanks I see a full of big fish. Booooor-ing! :D

    New fish

Can't go wrong with a blenny in my opinion. They love to sit and give you the eye.

Need help leveling 90g tank!! Gap under tank??

Being a little off perfectly level isn't really an issue, although !/2" over 4' is getting a bit out of my comfort zone. Having it on a surface that isn't perfectly flat does concern me, though. It's likely why the old tank sprang a leak. When I had a similar problem I used adhesive backed cork...

    picture of my fish

I didn't realize it was another fish hanging out of his mouth at first, was wondering why he had a tongue and why it was sticking out. :D

    Whats on my live rock

Aiptasia can spread rapidly and sting the ricordia or other corals so it's usually recommended you take em out. Neat algae btw. I used to have something similar, don't remember the name. What I do remember is when you damaged it and took it out of the tank one whiff and I was fighting hard to...

    Hitchhikers???

Just looks like some sponges and whatnot- nothing to be concerned about. I love all the stuff that shows up over time. As for the tiny crabs, you;re probably seeing copepods, which are a good sign. Free dinner for everyone bigger! Oh and one thing to possibly look out for as time goes on is...

    Who has the ugliest fish?

I can almost see him waddling on those little foot-fins, and nothing that waddles can be ugly!

    Secret fish admirers?

Sounds like it's time to set up and curtain and start charging for admission! :D

Help major nitrite spike won't go down

Is the nitrite so high that it's going off the test kit's scale? Maybe try diluting some tank water by 90% and testing it to see what you get. Anyway if those readings are accurate I'm amazed stuff is still alive.

    Coral advice

Since the tank is pretty small I'd make sure to check into the aggression level of any corals you consider. Some of them are real jerks and even a small colony could eat up half the available real estate by not letting anything else live there. As an example I had a diploastrea heliopora that...

    Biocubes and the like...

Personally I'm a fan of putting a setup together from individual parts. That way you get exactly what you want and can more easily fix/replace things when (not if) they break.

    Confessions of a Newbie

Hell I did the same thing many years ago. I still remember my five gallon tank full of goldfish, oblivious to their peril.

    Please help identify this beauty

Either way it's not a bad idea to try to isolate it somehow. If you can easily chip if off the rock and move it somewhere else I;d do that.

    faucet adapter

Have you checked the hardware store? I had to go get a new one recently and even my local little town store had a bunch of different types for every different faucet design.

    Ordering Fish Online

I order from liveaquaria pretty often because my local area is the same way. Well, there is one or two small stores, but looking at their tanks on the average day I wouldn't take what they have unless it was free.

    New tank

Indeed that is some nice looking rock. I like how you got it fairly tightly packed in front as well. I arranged mine like that and it was quite a challenge to figure out how to get everything to fit together.

    Mandarin !

Ooo neat! I've always wanted to keep a mandarin but didn't want to potentially doom one to starvation. That's an interesting idea for giving them a fighting chance in a tank full of competition. I may just have to give it a go some day soon.
