    Aiptasia? Hope not....

So this little dude just appeared on my wave maker maybe a week or so ago. It's tiny, sorry for the bad iPhone pics. It will retract when gently prodded. It looks whiter than aiptasia, but I've only seen big ones on live rock at a local pet store. I've never had any in my tank. The tank has been...

    Purigen and Discuss

Hi, I have read that chemical filtration and discus fish are not a good mix. Would running something like Purigen be okay though? Thanks!

    Cleaner shrimp deaths

Hello, I have had 2 cleaner shrimp die on me now, and I can't figure out why. I gave a 29 gallon FOWLER that currently houses one firefish and some snails and hermits. My parameters are good: pH 8.2, ammonia 0, trites 0, trates 10, specific gravity 1.024. The first shrimp I drip acclimated for...

    Filtration..

Is lava rock an acceptable bio media to place in an aquaclear 110 filter? Would be placing one, or possibly two of these on a 46G tank for discus. Would Ammonia remover media or phosphate remover media help at all? Which sponge medica would be better, the white type from aquaclear or the...

    Discus advice?

My boyfriend is thinking about starting a Discus tank.. he has a 46G bowfront. What types of tetra and other fish (clown loaches, blue rams) would compliment nicely? What type of Filter, Lighting, and food would be best? Will 4-5 Discus fit in the tank? Thanks for any help!!

    Finally got fish!

My saltwater tank has been ready to go for a few months now, but I just finally added some fish last night. So far so good! Saw them eat some this morning. I have a fire fish and two ocellaris clowns in a 29g fowler. Any suggestions for clean up crew additions?

    HOB filter refugium?

Hi, What is your thought on taking a HOB filter, like an aqua clear and running it with just LR rubble and maybe some chaeto? This is a 29g fowlr with no sump. Worth it?

    Starting a 29g FOWLR

Please let me know if I am on the right track. After much prowling of the interwebs, posting things in the wrong place here () and bugging people at the LFS: Equipment list: 29 gallon tank with stock LED hood (already have it) ~40lbs sand (not live) ~40lbs live rock x2 Koralia nano...

    Fin rot??

My betta suddenly has a ragged tail! Is this fin rot? My tank is filtered and heated with live plants. I do weekly pwcs and my parameters are good. Where did fin rot come from? I also noticed some filmy white floating on top of the water? I get this from time to time. Is it related? I am going...

Maybe thinking of starting a FOWLR...

I have the vague beginnings of an idea to start a FOWLR in my old 29 gallon tank. Not sure if I'm ready to go over to the salt side or not! I know I would need instant ocean for the salt and a refractometer to check the specific gravity. I'm assuming I would need to get a marine specific API...

    Another lighting question...

Sorry! I have been looking around here and online and I am just getting myself confused. I want to have a low tech tank, no CO2, easy plants. I currently have java fern, amazon sword, red crypt, wisteria, and cabomba. I use Flourish root tabs and Flourish comprehensive. My tank is 24" tall...

questions about converting to live plants

Hi, I'm trying to change over from plastic to real plants in my 56g column tank. My substrate is black blasting sand. I currently have a 2 java ferns anchored to a piece of driftwood and an amazon sword that is "planted" in the sand near my filter intake. If these do okay, I'd like to...

Is this a mini cycle or just my plants doing their job?

My 3 gallon betta tank (houses 1 male betta only) has been cycled for maybe a month and half or so now. I do 50% PWCs twice weekly with treated tap water. My last PWC was Friday. At that time, I took my filter media out, removed the carbon that it had come with because I heard keeping old...

    Operation tank swap

I'm swapping my fish from a 29gallon to a 56 gallon column tank. I want to post my plan of attack here for critique. I really want this to go smoothly and all my fish to survive, so please help! I plan to empty my tank water into two rubbermaid tubs. I'll put all my fish in one of the tubs...

    56g column stock

Hi all! I ended up getting a 56 gallon column tank (30" x 18" x 24") to upgrade my current 29 gallon tank. Here's what I'm thinking. I'd appreciate suggestions and input! x3 angelfish (already have them) x6 Colombian tetras (already have them) x6 peppered corys (already have 2) Fluval 306...

    Worth the upgrade?

So my angels are starting to outgrow the 29g, and I'm thinking it may be time to really start thinking either upgrade or rehome... I really wanted a 55 or 60g, but I just don't have room in my tiny house, but I saw a 56g column aquarium at petsmart today that I think might fit in the space...

    Will ghost shrimp fit in?

Hi all, I've been considering adding two or three ghost shrimp to my 3gallon tank. It currently has 1 male betta. (It is filtered and has a heater, btw.) I know that 3g is on the lower limit of what a betta can go in depending on the source, so would ghost shrimp add enough to the bioload...

    Betta type?

I got this guy because he looked neat. I tried to look up what this tail type is called and can't really find anything like it online. It looks lyre shaped to me, but apparently that doesn't exist. Any thoughts?

    Dumb question about water changers

Hi, I am currently using a siphon and bucket to do water changes on my tank. When I was a kid, my dad had a water changing hose thingy that hooked up to the faucet in the bathroom and you could suck out the old water and then fill the tank with new water with the thing. No bucket lugging...

    Fish death despite corrections?

Hi, I've had my aquarium set up for almost 12 months now. I cycled it and followed the parameters using an API test kit (the kind with the little test tubes and liquid reagents). Everything went great. Now all these months later, I had gotten lazy and stopped routine testing. (I have been...
