In most US chain stores, at least he one I work at, you are only seeing sections of a single 1000g+ tank and an enormous room sized filter system. The small space certainly isn't good for the fish, but fish sell pretty quickly so the stress is probably a hundred times less than the 15 min car...

I was planning on putting 6 Otos in my tank as soon as my tetras are settled in post-cycling. Glad to see that they're efficient as well as fun. :)

Oops. I'd add that lack of variety and exotics is also a big factor. I am getting my next order from an LFS because PS doesn't carry the Tetras I want.

I work at a PetSmart but I have no experience with the ordering/pricing of fish. But I would guess that it has a lot to do with volume of sales. My PetSmart easily goes through 100 neons 2x a week for example. Thus it is no mystery that they can charge as little as .80 per.

Heh. Not going to be very helpful. But it is 90 degrees here with 90% humidity and I'm still trying to heat my tank up beyond 80 degrees during a cycling because my AC is so darn efficient. XD

Have had both fresh and salt over the years. Decided to go freshwater with my current tank because the two women that live with in my house (my gf and her mom) would easily kill $800 worth of saltwater fish simply by trying to dust the tank with Pledge. ;)
