I keep java fern and a species of anubias in my 10 gallon and they do not need very much maintenance. If your looking for a small plant I've heard java moss is popular. (Though it grows pretty fast and might require trimming every once and a while.)

Yeah I have a 2 java ferns and a fish decor with two places for shrimp to hide though they seem to prefer scavenging the substrate.
