    Thinking about a SW tank

Babysitting income could probably only support a 16 gallon tank in this crazy hobby. Stick with the freshwater until you have better income but you could take the 16g tank and make a small biotope/nano tank.........1 nice piece of live rock, strip light, 1 -2 small pumps, 1 inch of aragonite...

    is this too many rocks?

You need to determine if you want a fish, reef or mixed reef tank. Whatever way you want it, just have it so doesn't have it look like a rock pile like most of the tanks you see on these sites .

    Live Sand for Fish-only set-up?

Live sand isn't needed. As to CC, ANY substrate will require maintenance........don't be fooled by anyone saying there's NO maintenance with this or that substrate. Any maintenance will be relative to the bio/fish load you have in the tank regardless if it's CC, aragonite or sand. You might look...

Rena Filstar XP3 or XP2 Canister Filter

dorian...........after you put the filter back together, it fills itself back up? That's great.............does it fill before you turn it on, or after? I thought you had to prime it by pouring water down a tube into it to fill it and than you can turn it on. Am I wrong? :(

Rena Filstar XP3 or XP2 Canister Filter

75 galsalt...................what type of tank are you thinking of setting up....FO, FOWLR or mixed reef. Though it may strike you as a mundane question, it is important and I should have asked you this before. :D

Rena Filstar XP3 or XP2 Canister Filter

I'd say get the XP3. I'm in the same process you are and I've been debating between the XP3 and a Fluval 404. The Rena's have been getting good reviews but I like the fact that in the Fluval, the foam pads are easily accessible on the side of the inside of the canister....therefor you don't...

    Help in Chosing a Filter

The new design on the Fluval is great ..........they work well and have more media capacity(402) than the Eheim Pro II. Eheims get great reviews but are costly. The Rena Filstar XP-3 is getting good write on it. Try looking into them too. AquaClears are very good but you have to keep the water...

Crushed Coral or Sand? What do you use?

Sand traps crud in it too. I got rid of mine(DSB), went to Crushed coral...1 - 1 1/4 inch and vacuum every 2 weeks and have NEVER had a problem with nitrates or anything else. If you do the 5 minute maintenance every 2 weeks or so depending on your bioload, you'll be fine.......on the same...

    LFS Advice sounds fishy (sorry)

Let's see.......first.....try and picture your tank with 45-70 lbs of live rock in it. How much room will your fish have to swim in? Along with that, since the majority of your internal tank volume will be consumed with rock, how many fish do you think you'll be able to put in it...
