Swim bladder disability? Otherwise healthy ryukin can't swim anymore

Concerning the comment about what constitutes constipation in fish - in freshwater fish there is a constant osmotic intake of water, so much so that they have no need to ever drink water and their primary problem is getting rid of the excess, so they pee like racehorses even though they never...

    Sick or just growing up?

Unfortunately, the ‘koi’ bettas are particularly prone to tumours - the marble gene that is responsible for the colouring of these fish is also why they’re so prone to tumours. The tumours start in the iridophores (chromatophores) that express the colours but because of the marble gene the...

39 gallon tank fishless cycling, with Dr Tim's ammonia

The way it works is that ammonia is converted into nitrite and nitrite is converted into nitrate. So nitrite ‘goes’ to make nitrate. That you already see nitrate is very good, very fast too. Nitrite sometimes never shows up on tests in a cycle, sometimes it rises very high and hangs around for...

    My Betta is not eating.

I note that you said you only feed the fish one pellet every few days. Do you not realize that you are starving it to death? How long have you had him? They need daily feeding and while over feeding is not good neither is slow starvation. Depending on how long you’ve had him, if he won’t eat...

    Plant Identification

I could be wrong but that looks very much like Alternanthera ficoidea, often sold as Green Hedge plant. If I’m right, unlike some other alternantheras, it’s not a true aquatic and will not last too long underwater. It’ll hang in for a few months but eventually it has to be taken out and grown...

    White Bump Neon Tetra face

Is there any way you can get a clearly focused image of the ‘bump’ on the neon and on one of the other fish? If it’s Columnaris, it’s a serious bacterial infection caused by Flavobacterium columnare and if it’s not appropriately and quickly treated it can be fatal and it is contagious. Fungus...

    Prolapse in Betta

That’s a fairly large mass of tissue - though it is possible for things like this to resolve on their own the longer it stays out, the less likely it becomes that it will resolve. Fasting was not a bad idea but you need to find out if the fish is willing to eat, if that’s possible. If he won’t...

    Plant ID

I realize this is an older thread but the plant with yellow in the leaves looks very much like L.repens ‘Atlantis’. If so it’s a fairly new plant and a very nice find.

What kind of shrimp is this?

I wish there was a still shot of it from a side profile. It doesn’t strike me as a true Ghost shrimp - I used to breed them and it just didn’t ring that bell. But I could not get a good enough look at it in the video. I wonder if might be C.longirostris, which do not get as big as true Ghosts...

    Any floating plant recommendations?

Something that can be grown floating but also planted is Pearlweed. Tiny leaves but it doesn’t need insane amounts of light or ferts and though its roots are very fine, once it has grown enough of them you could plant some if you like. But it floats just as well and provides a bit of shade and...

    potted anubias

It should be ok in pot provided the rhizome isn’t buried in whatever media is in the pot. Roots are fine digging into substrate or media but keep the rhizome off the media so it has water all around it. Personally I prefer them mounted on some wood or rock but we can’t all have the same tastes...

Mystery snail problem - need help

What's the problem with Mystery snails? I've bred a lot of them, maybe I can be of some help if you explain.

    Algae or Hydra?

I took another look at the images that were posted. I've a much better computer now and while I can't ID them, I can say with confidence they are NOT hydra. They are either a sessile or semi-sessile life form that is somewhat similar to Stentor or perhaps Vorticella or something along those...

    Any Canadians?

I think it depends on which Big Als, and if it's corporate or franchised, as well as the staff you deal with. I'm close to the Mississauga store and have spent a ton of money there over the years, so I'm a good customer. I'm about to cash in 3000 points worth and not for the first time. They...

    29 Gallon Planted Build...Advice Appreciated!!!

Once you stop using most kinds of ferts, whatever it was will get used up quite quickly, within days. But you won't see any change in the plants right away, as it will take time for them to show any effects of lack of nutrition.

    29 Gallon Planted Build...Advice Appreciated!!!

I suppose you could cut the roots off, but I never do. I think they probably assist with feeding. You can cut the stem just below a big set of roots and replant the cutting, and the main stem will branch, or should do.

    Any Canadians?

Tiny ones for the most part. Chain loach and Bettas are the only ones of any size. Pygmy cory, Habrosus cory, Panda cory, Strawberry Boraras and just got some Emerald Dwarf Rasboras.. though that's not their name now, I forget what it is changed to. Also a lot of shrimp. Painted Fire Red...

    freshwater clams

Me too ! Filter shrimp, clams, daphnia, moina, various other tiny invert species like Fairy shrimps, for which I have eggs and some hope, at some point. Must get some fresh single cell algae cultures going though, as they will be needed for the moina and fairy shrimps and I feed them to the...

    freshwater clams

If you don't mind the trouble, new hatched BBS may be useful too, for shrimp and clams. Somewhere, once, I read an article where someone had kept clams a long time, and come up with a diet for them. If I bookmarked it, it's on the old laptop, haven't switched the old data to the new machine yet...

Angelfish ~ can you determine the sex

I am no expert on eggs. From other posts I have read, it appears eggs that are fertile change colour within a day or two, and if not, probably not fertile. Do changes, just don't go near the eggs, but they will most likely be stuck to whatever they are on. If I'm wrong I hope somebody tells...

    freshwater clams

I was just looking up rotifer powder, and the sites appear to be Asian mainly. They all say to mix the powder with water [sea water usually, they're talking mainly shrimp farming], and to aerate the container for 5-10 minutes, then spread the resulting mixture evenly over the surface. I'll have...

    freshwater clams

I do not think they have nearly as much bioload as fish, but I am not certain, it's not something I've ever been able to find out about for sure. You'd need a scale that weighs in small increments, single grams at least if not less than grams. Where do you get rotifer powder ? Never heard of or...

    freshwater clams

Main thing is to bear in mind is that the clams virtually never stop filtering. They can only make use of very small things, but with other filter feeders in their tank, they're competing for the same food. So you have to feed enough to ensure they all get fed. Weighing or measuring the clams...
