diy root tabs - cellulose and bubbles

So I recently made some DIY root tabs and stuck them in my tank. They were made with some dynamite vegetable and flower fertilizer and some capsules. The store I was at for the capsules was a little crunchy and didn't have gelatin capsules so I got some made with cellulose instead. Not concerned...

    gravel vs. sand

How about the whole gas pocket thing with sand. Is that really a problem? Anyone ever had fish injured as a result? If it is, how do you stir a planted sand tank without snails?

    New tank. Ideas?

Hmm Chinese.. how about a golden dojo loach? I don't know much of anything about them though other than they look like dragons. Make sure you take all the necessary accessories into account when pricing for your budget. Test kit, heater, filter, siphon, bucket, etc. Lots to get and it can add...

    mystery death

Hmm, well that makes me feel a little more comfortable, because I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if I bumped a fish harder than it would get bumped falling on the floor. I guess something must have been released from the substrate or something while fiddling with plants that shocked the...

    mystery death

Yeah, everyone else is doing ok. Could a fish due if it got physically bumped? I don't think I did that, but I was in messing with plants.

    mystery death

Once a week, 50%. Temp is within a degree of the tank's. The deaths happened before the water change though. Nothing had gone in the tank except my hands.

    mystery death

Tap pH doesn't vary. It's7.6 or 7.8 depending on how you read the scale, but it's never wavered. Liquid rock.

    gravel vs. sand

How about when would gravel be preferable?

    mystery death

This is the second time I've had mystery death of a bloodfin and I'm looking for help diagnosing so this doesn't repeat. In both cases I've had an otherwise healthy bloodfin tetra die with no visible symptoms. Great coloration, no visible physical trauma, eyes look good, scales look smooth, but...

    gravel vs. sand

I'm just curious, are there any fish for which or particular circumstances other than personal aesthetics where gravel is preferable?

    WC question

It's due to concentrations. The dechlorinator works much faster and completely when it is in a higher concentration. You aren't adding a particular amount of dechlorinator. You are adding a particular concentration, which means you need to use whole tank volume or it won't be as effective.

    WC question

Just until you've added the new water. The dechlorinator works pretty much instantly; it just needs a chance to mix which will happen as you are adding new water.

    WC question

You don't want untreated tap water running through the beneficial bacteria in your filter and killing them. Turning off the filter gives the dechlorinator a chance to mix with the tap and work.

    Fish Compatibility

Dwarf cichlids? Apistogramma, rams, or kribs? Depending on what else is in there and what you get you could get multiple pairs I think.

    Want to try plants, but...

Distance from center is a good point. I think one of the first replies to that article asks about 24" bulbs on a 30" tank. I never saw an answer to that. However, my crypt wendtii in the center is growing faster than the one up against the wall on the left.

    Want to try plants, but...

I just got into fish back in September and decided to add some easy plants as well. I have the exact same tank and light and my plants are doing great for my goals. Easy to take care of, growing slowly, look great. I've got an anubias of some type, a java fern, two red crypt wendtii, a crypt...

    Silicates

I am adding some flourish and iron weekly. Would cutting back on those help? I am planning to get some more plants too, just need to obtain them... If only local stores had them.

    Silicates

I'm getting tired of my brown algae. This tank started its fish less cycle on September 10th, had plants added on September 14th, and the first fish introduced on October 1st. It's now been 4 months. Am I past the being patient phase? Is there a silicate test somewhere that I can use to test my...

    Apisto Stag tank

I'm working on the final addition to our 29 gallon community tank and I'm considering adding 2 male apistogramma of different species. Current stock 7 bloodfin tetras 5 skunk corydoras 1 angelfish We want something with a little personality and color. While getting a male/female pair sounds...

    quarantine single tetra

We recently lost a bloodfin and I want to bring the group back to six. Are there any problems with sticking a single tetra in a quarantine tank by itself for the few weeks until it can join the others?

    First dead fish

Picture of the blood fin :( Also, probably doesn't matter, but power was out for an hour, hour and a half yesterday morning. Not long enough to have the temp drop any significant amount and I stuck in an airstone powered by battery powered air pump during that time.

    First dead fish

We just had our first fish fatality today and I have no idea why. If anyone can shed light on the matter, I'd appreciate it. This is our first fish tank. 29 gallon tank. Lightly planted. Before today, 6 bloodfin tetras (added 10/1/13) and 5 skunk corydoras (added 10/12/14). Was actually going...

newbie looking for opinions on everything

Elodea, Anacharis, same thing :) Mine has been dying off over the past week. From everything I've read that isn't easy to do, but it's warmer than I think Anacharis likes it (78/26). The other plants don't seem too happy either though. Would liquid CO2 at the expense of any Anacharis be...

newbie looking for opinions on everything

Nice fish, but probably an expensive snack eventually. Thanks for the suggestion! The gravel seems to range fro 1/8" to 3/8", mostly in the middle. I asked a LFS if it was ok for corys before buying it, and he said it'd be fine. Maybe someday I'll feel like rearranging and try to add a sandbox...
