Was I swindled by this fish breeder/seller?

You'd be amazed how different a fish's appearance can be due to various factors. Tank light (style, amount, spectrum etc), ambient light in the room, substrate color, background color, etc etc etc.

    Schooling tank mates for Angels

I'd do a school of full grown rummynose tetra. They should be a bit too big to end up being snacks for the angels; and they are one of, if not the, tightest schooling fish you can get.

    Hermaphrodite platy?

Its probably not a hermaphrodite per se; but I have heard of platys changing sex when needed supposedly.

    Eel stuck in decoration

This sounds about right to me. I'd be truly amazed if a fish was able to fit into somewhere and be unable to get back out.

    Second filter?

Beats me. Might be one of those situations where you need to try it and see what works.

    Anybody use shop lights?

It certainly could be caused by that; but I've never bothered examining enough to find out for sure. I've got a current usa satellite led fixture (1 of many currently being used in my fishroom) that crapped out earlier this week. Before over-reacting and assuming the worst I just swapped the...

    Second filter?

Tanins are actually quite beneficial for most species. It can be ugly to see though. It will eventually/gradually be less noticeable if you just keep up with regular water changes. As noted above purigen and carbon can help; but they will be removing it from teh water column and not...

    Anybody use shop lights?

In theory you're right. However, the failure rate on the led fixtures in the aquarium world so far seems very very high. Most often its just the power source; but still seems to be happening far too often. A couple of new fluorescent tubes once or twice a year still seems easier (cheaper)...

I can not get my PH level to go up

why are you trying to change the ph of the tank? is something wrong? I'm a fan of suggesting that no one should try to alter the PH. Most fish will acclimate to various ph levels. Consistency is the important part. The actual number doesn't matter too much.

    API liquid test kit question

I think you'll live. Take a look at the bottles; one is a bit more caustic than the rest and has a more serious warning on it. Might be one of the nitrate solutions but I cant recall for sure.

    Melafix ?

both melafix and pimafix are pretty natural. They are barely considered medicines. However, the ingredients (the clove and tea tree oils specifically) are/can be used to euthanize fish in a high enough concentration. They can help for very minor issues like fin rot; but then again so can...

    Ram in 8 gal?

What kind of ram and what other inhabitants will be in the tank? I'd say this is more than enough for something like a german blue ram. They are not very big fish. Might be small for a bolivian ram though.

    Vacation

If you're not there to do any maintenance then I'd suggest no food for your absence. The fish will survive and you wont have uneaten food slowly fouling up your tank.

    Big leak

The quick answer should be no. This is not resealing a tank. This is re-building a tank. Resealing a tank should only be done before the catastrophic failure that is described here. Resealing a tank does not involve separating the panels of glass and removing the silicone there (which is not...

    calculating home made octagon tank

Double check your measurements as something doesn't sit right with me....especially at the triangles. That outside edge can not be the same as the other 2 edges if there is truly a right angle as it appears on your diagram.

    calculating home made octagon tank

I think you've got the right idea. But your diagram seems to be missing at least one if not more measurements to confirm. Backwards engineering your math and I'm coming up with a tank height of 20 inches? Assuming your measurements are in inches anyway? Also not sure if the photo is to scale...

    Dwarf chchlid, rams

Choose something you like to look at! Do some research and figure out what you might need to breed any particular species and choose based on what you might be capable of doing based on those needs. A 20 gallon tank is an ok choice to try and get a pair of fish to breed in. But then what...

    Bottom filter info.

a bottom filter? Do you mean an undergravel filter? They were quite popular a number of years ago; but seem to have fallen out of favor. While they do work; they really require a complete tank tear down every so often so you can physically remove the muck that accumulates under there. So...

    Angelfish qualitys?

There are for every fish, and every species of animal, plant, etc. Anything that someone might look at and try to compare to another basically! As with most of these things though, even if your fish looks amazing and would fit the criteria for the "best" of whatever quality you might care...

dirt for dirted tank? Is it safe?

check the ingredients list. There are a lot of different types of "dirt" that will work. The old suggestion of the miracle grow organic choice dirt was great; but they seem to have discontinued that exact product. What was good about that old miracle grow stuff was what was listed in the...

How to Trigger your discus to breed in treated Tap water

I doubt the fish had a maternal instinct and wanted a baby because she saw a juvenile! Discus, like any other fish, will eat their own young without skipping a beat! While discus do have more of a parenting instinct than other fish I really doubt they desire to be parents in the same way a...

Better photo of the new Ram

Yup. as already stated its a balloon ram and its characteristics should be identical to any other dwarf rams essentially. Rams have a relatively short lifespan to begin with; and the balloon variety are even shorter!

Am I ready to buy Fish?

Why ask the question if you're going to disregard the answer? As noted above, you're tank is not ready for fish even if you're ready to go buy them!
