This is a privately owned store and I know the owners very well, but yes I still should of quarantined them.

I feed mine once a day, just enough for them to eat in a minute or two. Once a week I'll give them a treat like blood worms. At night I'll usually toss in a blanched veggie or a couple of algae wafers for my late nighters.

That makes sense to have a good build up of organisms for them to feed on. I guess I'll just wait another six months and if I feel the urge I'll try them again. My main concern though is just how fast they died. I've never had anything die that fast, especially since the ghost shrimp have...

You can have some luck with T8 bulbs in the 6500k range from the less demanding plants, but it will be a very limited selection. What are the dimensions of the tank and what wattage is the light? Does it go across the whole aquarium?

Have you messed with the filtration system any?Like cleaning the media? Also, what are your results for Nitrate,nitrite, and ammonia?

I really don't think so, but anything is possible while I'm not looking. If I would have been a good little fish keeper I would have quarantined them, but as I stated they had been at the LFS for a month or more and I stop by at least 4 times a week on my way home. :facepalm:

Moisten the dirt before capping it, wait at least a month before adding fish. Even if the tank is cycled, the organics will still be breaking down and will cause fish death. I just ran into this this with my new dirted tank. :(

Even if you went planted, sand will work fine. I prefer sand over gravel, and dirt/sand in most of my planted tanks. I do have a successful all sand planted tank.
