Been cycling my new tank for the up coming experiments and I noticed the cycle kind of stalled out on me.
Knowing that nitrification consumes alkalinity it occurred to me I might have run the KH into the ground. Only been a few days.
Checked my pH and sure enough. 6.4 Yikes. Good thing there is...
I have always been a huge fan of knowing the truth. I always wanted to know all about the unseen bacterial and chemical world inside my aquarium. For 20 years now. I just find the unseen fascinating.
However, after yet another realization that a kit is misreporting due to interference from...
DISCLAIMER:
This is info based on experiments I ran and documented over the past year. They were observation stage quick and dirty experiments. Not proper controlled scientific studies. A person could try it for them-self much cheaper then I can do those large, multiple tank experiments.
The...
Final Report.
Some people will argue that all these results are invalid because they were not done with a proper control group etc. They think such experiments are not valuable due to this. So I have a few answers for them.
1. Wheres your experiments?
2. We are not in the controlled experiment...
I never planned to try Excel. I never even knew about it. I was visiting the Museum of Play On Rochester, NY a few years back and they had a tropical tank there. Was discussing things with the keepers and they were telling me how Excel had really helped the BBA situation and had made the plants...
So I have had a 20 Gal Planted with dirt for almost a year now.
It has always had traces of BBA.
The best thing I ever did to get rid of BBA was to cut those leafs. I almost had it wiped out.
Excel in the tank water did nothing.
Excel applied directly did work but the daily dose is to small to...
I have been posting a lot of research on this site since it's birth. I have been doing a lot of research on Fresh Water Planted Tanks this year with a focus on low maintenance. I have always preferred Salt Water tanks but I do enjoy all tanks. The Amano stuff really made me curious about Fresh...
Myself and another member were discussing Calcium in the planted tank today. How important but unknown it is to many planted tank keepers. Calcium deficiency has been associated with misshapen leaves and sometimes wrinkly leaves which can also be cause by other problems.
Most hobbyists use the...
I tried every way to possibly reduce and eliminate these as possible. It is possible in heavily planted tanks that have been established for a long enough. In the end, WC's are just much less money and knowledge required. Only large systems are worth the added methods. Mostly in Salt water...
Thought I would post pics of my test kits. I don't know what it is but I am just fascinated with aquarium chemistry. Especially when it comes to trying to figure out what type of algae likes what conditions.
Here is a pic of my Algae test tank.
I try adding all the things associated...
Has anyone played with the Fluval CO2 system with disposable cartridges? I know it's more $ and less quality but it might be good for me because getting co2 refills here is a pita. I also understand it doesn't shut off at night so maybe I need to find a solenoid etc. Just wondering what people...
DISCLAIMER: None of the tests used in this experiment are very accurate. No livestock was resent during these experiments. They were conducted in a 4 cup measuring cup.
I wanted to see if regular levels of chlorine found in my tap water could react with normal levels of ammonia found in a tank...
Couldn't update old thread anymore so here is a new one. I don't inject CO2 and I love soil which is hidden under the gravel.
I have MTS and 2 Nerrite which keep the glass clean. An Oto which keeps the slime and stain type algae away. No more BBA since taking those leaves and lowering light a...
So for a while now I have been shooting for 5 ppm Nitrate and 0.5 ppm Phosphate which is low levels and a proper N to P ratio of 10 to 1.
If I turned the light up more I get GSA. In the past I added up to 2 ppm phosphate to try to eliminate the GSA but all I got was GHA instead so I backed the...
I recently bought some chlorine test strips. I wished to verify my tap water contains chlorine and not chloramine which the pet stores always insist. What I found, besides the fact I was right, is the product is very dangerous. I am told that chlorine as low as 0.25 ppm could still kill...
I recently bought a Hanna LR Phosphate Checker (Model HI 713)
I love it's ease of use and range. It works in Fresh or Salt water.
I use it in my planted tank to set my level of Phosphate to 0.5 ppm.
I also use it in all my other tanks to make sure my GFO is keeping my phosphate below 0.1 ppm...
I posted my Lifes work on Algae in the general section. Not much interest. Thought maybe some of the advanced types over here might be interested.

As many of you know I am very interested in Algae in aquariums. Mostly the killing and preventing of it. I have been actively focused on it since 99. I have read many articles and study many subjects to also include ponds, waste water treatment and basic inorganic chemistry. I have recently read...
So for the last 6 months I have been testing the Current U.S.A. LED+ Light. 28-36" model on my 20 gal planted tank. Photo period is 5 hours on 4 hours off 5 hours on 10 hours off.
It has approximately 1500 hours of burn in time as of this experiment.
For those of you who do not know. Plants...
I like to strip phosphate out of my water as much as possible in my Fish Only systems. I find it goes a long way in algae prevention. I have great success with GFO however it does require the use of certain equipment such as a Phosphate reactor from Two Little Fishes. That raises the price on...
I have been reading about BBA in my Phycology book. It has very little to say about it :(
It does claim BBA needs bright light and can't live in low light conditions.
I wondered what your experiences have been.
