    n00b needs advice on plants

Just get a loach  Plants are great to put in first since they will help keep the ammonia in check.

    2 empty tanks, need suggestions

Planted. I love my thickly planted 29gal. It is by far my favorite tank to stare at.

    glass tops

Places mentioned above are where I get mine. Both stores pack them very well so you shouldnt have to worry about a broken top.

    mixing cory cats

My cories dont seem to notice they are not all the same. My High-fin greens, pandas and sterbais all school together. In fact the larger greens help push the pandas to the food, its pretty funny

    nitrate reducing media

Water Changes I use Purigen in my tank and it helps too. Also live plants help a ton. They use the nitrates quite well. In fact in my planted tanks I have to add Nitrogen because the plants soak it all up and still need more.

ironic - i cleaned my aquaclear 200 - its making MORE noise

Hmm maybe you still have bubbles on the impeller and its cavitating? Mine is noisy at first but quiets down.

What is close to a s/w tank in freshwater.

I would say the Rift Lake Cichlids will be the closest to salt with aquascape and fish coloring. Never done them myself though.

    Tiger Barbs

I have 9 Tigers in my tank and have no problems with them fighting. I believe the females have a more rounded belly than the males. So Im figuring I have 4 females and 5 males and the dominant male has the brightest coloring. He runs the show.

    Guppy food

Most fish are omnivores, so they require plant matter also.

    Guppy food

Just read the bloodworm thing. Feed as treat not as a staple food and you will be ok.

    Guppy food

Should be fine. I feed the little feeder guppy that got tossed in my bag accidentally the New Life Spectrum small fish stuff that I feed my Pristella Tetras.

    ideas on my river tank

They are just real sensitive to water conditions. Alot of people use them as a water quality indicator, the duller the red head the poorer the water conditions.

    Veggies for Tetras and Corys

Yes you should skin the peas as the outer shell is not easily digestible (if at all)

My bigalsonline list: What am I missing?

When you are cycling your tank you are basically waiting for beneficial bacteria colonies to for to convert your ammonia and then nitrite. Some people use carbon when first setting up their tanks to remove whatever chemicals might be in the tank due to shipping and handling. My Eheim canisters...

My bigalsonline list: What am I missing?

Ceramic rings are for the biological bacteria, they are a porus material where they colonize. Carbon in only really used to remove meds or other impurities from the water.

What substrate ? White or Black.

I have white pool filter sand. It is a PITA to clean but when it is it looks natural (course it looks very natural dirty  )

My bigalsonline list: What am I missing?

I am growing Wisteria, Jungle val, and anubias Nana with pool filter sand. Just try to stick with plants that pull nutrients from the leaves more than the roots. The lunar lights have no effect on plant growth. A good size bottle of Prime (250ml) will last you a while.

My bigalsonline list: What am I missing?

Look at the Current Lunar Links instead of the Coralife light. I like them much more. Also whatever you choose you will need more than 1. They say one light every 2 feet, so I would shoot for 3 lights. I have 2 Lunar links over my 29gal and it looks amazing at night. That light is ok for fish...

large aquariums in apartments - safe?

My lease says specifically no tanks larger than 30gal. It does not say how many though

Ive used Biospira numerous times and never had a problem. Like flipz said probably got too warm.

    25% water changes?????

If you are adding water directly into the aquarium via hose (Python system) you should treat the WHOLE volume of the tank. This is due to the new water already mixing with the new water. At least thats how Ive always done it. With the little amounts for Prime I have to use its no big deal to...
