Should a Fluval 106 make much noise?

Thanks all. I've taken it apart then reassembled making sure the filter media bags had all the air squeezed out, the baskets were sitting better together and the pipework was taught. After tipping it around to get more air out it seemed slightly quieter. I'll just have to see how it goes...

Should a Fluval 106 make much noise?

Thanks for the advice. I'll try tightening-up the water lines and place the canister more central to the in/outflows to the tank. Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

Should a Fluval 106 make much noise?

I set up a new Fluval 106 canister filter today but I'm worried that something is wrong with it because of the loud(ish) humming noise that it makes. I've read reviews saying that they should be silent but you can hear this one from a couple of metres away. Any thoughts? Sent from my iPad...

Cycling new tank using Purigen pack

It's a steep learning curve and any advice that stops me causing harm is highly valued. Thanks again. Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

Cycling new tank using Purigen pack

Thanks for the advice. I put the Purigen in to clean out the tannins given out by a piece of bog wood. It does that really well but I've not really read about what else it's doing. Regarding the ceramics - I'm new (since March) to keeping fish and if the Fluval instructions tell me to...

Cycling new tank using Purigen pack

I set up a 22 litre tank (for shrimp) yesterday. It just crossed my mind that I could use the Purigen pack (100ml - 3 months old) from my other tank as a quick source of beneficial bacteria whilst I cycle the new one. Would this work? (I don't want to take the foam or the ceramic rings out...

Adding more fish to a recently cycled tank

Thanks. I had wondered about the size of the cardinals. I expect that I'll be getting a larger tank in the next 6 months. At what size should I move them? 1.5"? How quickly do they grow?

Adding more fish to a recently cycled tank

My new Fluval Edge 46l has finished cycling (fishless) and I have started stocking it with cardinal tetras. I wanted 5 but the assistant in my lfs said I should only take 3 to start with. How can I tell when it will be ok to add more? Do I just keep up the water tests and check that ammonia...

Pond/Assassin snails in new planted cycling tank

Used the cucumber method and I seem to be rid of them. Thanks for the advice both.

Pond/Assassin snails in new planted cycling tank

I'd read that lightly boiled lettuce would attract them. Cucumber sounds easier. There aren't any fish in the tank yet but I expect the cycle will be complete on Sat/Sun. I'd like to start stocking it straight after that. Thx.

Is the Fluval Edge 46l light good enough for plants?

Thanks. I've read-up a bit more and this makes sense. It's these little costs that I wasn't expecting when I first started out. It's all exciting but I suppose this steep learning curve was always going to be expensive.

Pond/Assassin snails in new planted cycling tank

Nice. I like that idea rather than dumping a load of poisons in there. The plants would have a few minutes of ecstasy as well! Would it affect the cycling bacteria though? Would it kill any snail eggs?

Pond/Assassin snails in new planted cycling tank

At the beginning of my fishless cycle (2 weeks ago) I put half a dozen plants in the tank. No snails from these. 3 days ago I added some more and last night the snails started appearing. About a dozen were in there this morning and they seem to be surviving the nitrite spike. I've read a lot...

Is the Fluval Edge 46l light good enough for plants?

I'm in the middle of cycling my first tank and have had trouble with some of the plants - some of their leaves are starting to go yellow/brown. In particular the Cryptocoryne x willisii. The assistant in my lfs said that my substrate (proflora start under grey sand) is ok but the light in the...
