    Pregnant Ghost Shrimp, white spots?

Most of the shrimp died over a relatively short period for reasons unknown, I put the remainder into a community tank to see if a bigger environment that I knew was stable would help, but eventually all disappeared.

    C02 vs No C02???

I've got Vals 8' long and some about 1.5" across using metracide at the recommended excel dose. I think like anything else an important consideration is to change slow -- start with low doses and build up slow, and don't change rapidly going forward after that. Val's don't like change. It...

    25 watt fully submersible heater

I have a 25W Neo-Therm from Cobalt, which I'm quite happy with. Innocuous and fully submersible, and includes a temperature readout.

What makes a canister hum more?

Delapool, I could probably put a blanket over it, nothing more structured, it's really crammed into a corner now beside some cabinets (the hoses run sideways to the tank 4' away). But... hmm... maybe a blanket. Never considered that, but I don't see a need for air circulation around it...

What makes a canister hum more?

Interesting. Is this more like a sump, where it's open to the air on top? The canisters I've seen are sealed, water coming in via one tube and out by another, no air inside at all.

What makes a canister hum more?

That's.... different. In this one, the pump is actually at the top. Until the media area fills and actually over-fills, the pump is dry. I don't think this one works the same way as what you have (nor does the Fluval).

What makes a canister hum more?

I'm sorry, I thought a canister was by definition completely full if it didn't have air in it. Can you elaborate a bit on what "over full" means in this context, and how I might check?

What makes a canister hum more?

Yeah, good flow, in fact after cleaning (it was pretty awful) the flow went way up, but no change in noise. If I stop the flow, I get a fair amount of clacking as you might expect, but this is more of a hum. Though since the rotation is synced with the 60 cycle current noise in the rotation...

What makes a canister hum more?

Incidentally the change came over a period of about 9 months, slowly. It was not "break" where suddenly it was loud. It just got worse.

What makes a canister hum more?

I have four SunSun HW404B filters, and one Fluval 306. I bought the Fluval first, and you can tell which ones I liked better. However. One of them... naturally the one in my office, is getting louder. Substantially louder -- from almost dead silent, to now being audible over my computer...

What are some random DIY things you have made?

Random things: 12V power supply for four Current LED+ lights instead of using four bricks -- more efficient and likely will last longer as it has a fan if it gets too warm. This was an old PC power supply that would otherwise be thrown away. It also provides +5 for a Raspberri Pi computer to...

Are these planaria, or something else? Shrimp tank with photos

And safe to ignore (I killed several and have not seen more lately, but I suspect they are still there). Then I wonder what to look for to explain the lack of babies. The females are getting berried, seem to carry them to term (I haven't seen eyes as they tend to hide more, but have seen very...

Are these planaria, or something else? Shrimp tank with photos

I'm set with that from spot treating algae in a big tank: About $7 in parts with a bit of hot glue. The tube I used is stiff plastic I got at a LFS, the airline I used first is too hard to aim in a big tank while not getting your hands in the water (and in so stirring it).

Are these planaria, or something else? Shrimp tank with photos

That's good to know, I have plenty of Metracide. I have not used it in that tank for the few plants, but spot treatment sounds really easy. So you don't think these are my problem with no baby shrimp?

Are these planaria, or something else? Shrimp tank with photos

Small (30G) shrimp tank with about 10 red cherry shrimp. It is a fairly new setup. At the first shrimp's release of eggs (not sure if just before or just after, they were hiding) I decided I had too course of a filter cover and replaced it. Four or five small shrimp eventually showed up, the...

Treating ick with red cherry shrimps

They came with ich. Ich cannot be caused by stress. Stress can make it get worse and show up, but they must be infected to get it. So yes, they could have had a low grade infestation at the LFS, and being in a small group bought it out, but it is a myth that stress causes ich. mpulido0316...

Treating ick with red cherry shrimps

If you try heat (and I'm a fan -- two for two successful treatment, one with ghost shrimp), be sure to raise the temperature to at least 87F and keep it there two full weeks, no less, and if in doubt of accuracy of your thermometer go higher not lower. The issue with heat is temps from around...

Well, depends on just how much the wife dislikes the filter sitting beside it. :hide:

    Ramshorn eggs

Ramshorn invasions are really not an all or nothing issue. I have them in all tanks. In small numbers they are good cleaners, and interesting. When they get to be too many I throw a cucumber slide in the tank (weighted down), and the next morning pick it up with a few dozen small sails...

    Feeding a Bristlenose

Incidentally putting food in their caves is not a good idea if you have snails, as they come in droves and clog off the cave.

Ph way up after water change ...

+1 If you are going to use tap water just let them get used to it. Don't add KH buffer if your tap water PH is too high. Don't try to add something to reduce the PH as it will be an exercise in frustration. If you added a lot of KH buffer you can reduce it by doing another water change...

    DIY stand for the 150

Change one middle brace to be at an angle? Diagonal braces are good for another eason - perfectly rectangular braces are not very resistant to side forces (think some young kid running into it full blast and pushing it sideways at the bottom of the tank). That's not an issue if you plywood the...

    Unwanted New Acquisition

Stick a cucumber slice in the tank (I put a nail through it as a weight). Wait 24 hour or so, pick it up with lots of snails. Repeat regularly. Almost makes good food for other things like BN plecos, shrimp, etc., but all them will flee quickly when you pick it up. Don't leave it in too long...

Baby Red Cherry Shrimp and Baby Plecos

I decided to turn a quarantine tank into a Red Cherry Shimp tank, so there are 5 adults in there (3 female + 2 males) and they are doing fine, one female is all berried and likely to release in a few days. I had a community tank with baby plecos, and surprisingly all were being eaten by (top...
