Interesting. Is this more like a sump, where it's open to the air on top? The canisters I've seen are sealed, water coming in via one tube and out by another, no air inside at all.

That's.... different. In this one, the pump is actually at the top. Until the media area fills and actually over-fills, the pump is dry. I don't think this one works the same way as what you have (nor does the Fluval).

I'm sorry, I thought a canister was by definition completely full if it didn't have air in it. Can you elaborate a bit on what "over full" means in this context, and how I might check?

Yeah, good flow, in fact after cleaning (it was pretty awful) the flow went way up, but no change in noise. If I stop the flow, I get a fair amount of clacking as you might expect, but this is more of a hum. Though since the rotation is synced with the 60 cycle current noise in the rotation...

I'm set with that from spot treating algae in a big tank: About $7 in parts with a bit of hot glue. The tube I used is stiff plastic I got at a LFS, the airline I used first is too hard to aim in a big tank while not getting your hands in the water (and in so stirring it).

Ramshorn invasions are really not an all or nothing issue. I have them in all tanks. In small numbers they are good cleaners, and interesting. When they get to be too many I throw a cucumber slide in the tank (weighted down), and the next morning pick it up with a few dozen small sails...

Incidentally putting food in their caves is not a good idea if you have snails, as they come in droves and clog off the cave.

+1 If you are going to use tap water just let them get used to it. Don't add KH buffer if your tap water PH is too high. Don't try to add something to reduce the PH as it will be an exercise in frustration. If you added a lot of KH buffer you can reduce it by doing another water change...
