I know I am impatient re cycling, but gheesh!

Nitrate is the end product of the cycle and it's okay to have nitrate as long as it's under 30ppm. The bacteria doesn't eat nitrate so if you take it out it won't hurt anything and the only way to get rid of nitrate is with a water change. However, live plants do use nitrate as a macro...

    I dont know

My heater isn't adjustable and it stays at 76 degrees and I cycled in about 6 weeks. If you do have 8ppm of ammonia that is a lot and it might've stalled the cycle so it's good you did a water change. Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

Can't get Ammonia level to zero

This is what I use to make my own filter pads and they work really well. I have used this sheet for 4 filters already and still have some left. Like they said just rinse in aquarium water and replace only if they are falling apart which my oldest one is about 8 months old and still in good...

    New tank cycling distractions

During the nitrite phase I pretty much just left it alone for days at a time cuz every day of no changes was driving me mad. Three weeks later it was done! Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

    For Sale or trade: Driftwood

Hi, I got this piece from someone, but upon further examination I think it's soft wood as my nail goes in it and it is light. Maybe it can be used on a terrarium? Make an offer or I'd trade for plants. Will ship to 48 lower states only. Shipping from indianapolis $4.50 first class. Thanks...

Are nitrates and phosphates bad for planted aquariums?

I think it's because if you have fish you should already have nitrates in the tank so you shouldn't need to add more. If you have a lot of fast growing plants, however, they might use up all the nitrate and then you would have to add more. Too much phosphate supposedly creates algae problems...

How do I know if my tank is cycled?

I would wait to add the ghost shrimp until you are cycled because they might die. Mine died when I had a leak in my tank that resulted in losing a lot of my bacteria and had to fish in cycle. Or you can try one first now and see how it does. Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

Oddity? Never saw Nitrites during Cycle

    What kind of snails?

So do your ghost shrimp control your snail population pretty well? I have two ghost shrimp with some fish and the female keeps having babies but they keep getting eaten so maybe I could put them in with the snails once I get the tank. I'm also setting up a red cherry shrimp tank, so I kinda...

    What kind of snails?

Sorry my question is kinda vague. I suppose I mean I kinda wanna have something cool looking and kinda rare. Maybe even something common like a nerite or ramshorn but a more uncommon color (if they exist). I'd like to have plants but not a must. And it doesn't matter if they breed or not...

    What kind of snails?

I kind of want to get a snail only tank but don't know much about them. Would a 5 gallon tank be enough and for how many? And what are the more desirable snails and why? Thanks :) Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

I don't want to overload our tank, but...

A lot of plecos get big and they poop a lot so I would return it especially if you just got it to eat algae. You could look into shrimp to help you with the algae and they're fun to watch. Or snails too I suppose.
