Yup, I agree with that.^ But Bio-Spira, provided you have a fresh batch and use it correctly, can do the job as well.

Your bioload should be fine, but don't get two males. In such close quarters, they'll likely kill each other.

Driftwood and/or peat will bring it down somewhat naturally, and should keep it stable. I'm not sure how often you have to change the peat if you use that.

Python all the way. I suck out my 30-50%, adjust the water temperature to the temperature of my tank, reverse the value, pour in some prime, and watch 'er fill. Couldn't be easier, and my fish really seem to love PWC time.
