    Newbie cycling question

It is unlikely that you insta-cycled, otherwise you would see some nitrate being produced. The one plant isn't enough to suck all of it up to give you that 0/0/0 reading. I would wait to add more fish until you get some readings (of any kind). Are you shaking the crap out of the kit...

Trying to narrow down my plants

You don't have to use CO2 - I don't and have similar plants to your list. I do use Seachem Excel however. It is a carbon source substitute. Using it will help keep up your carbon in balance in regards to light and other nutrients (thus keeping algae down). I would suggest getting an anubias...

    Lighting a 10g planted

Not sure if you're still looking for answers on the Finnex Stingray, but I just got the 16" model about 3 weeks ago. It's a nice light - shows the tank's colors off nicely and is good for growing plants. Lightweight and works well with a light timer. However, I keep mostly low-tech...

    Need help with nutrient deficiencies?

Oh. I was under the impression that anubias, java, and hygrometer all water column feeders? Is there any difference between liquid fert dosing and it being in the substrate with a root tab? Unfortunately right now I am out of money for a substrate upgrade :-/ It's my next purchase. Would you...

    Need help with nutrient deficiencies?

Hi! I'm looking for some pointers on my plants and what deficiencies may be causing my problems. Tank specs: - 5 gallon for betta, established for several months - Heated to 80F - Sponge filter - 7.7 pH - 0/0/~10 water params - kH...I used a color strip and it read about 60? 80? I have "semi...

Best shrimp and snail for tank detritus?

Thanks! I was maybe going to start with ghost shrimp, since they are cheaper, to see if my betta will try to eat them. Then upgrade to amanos... Do nerites leave little eggs all over the place? I don't know if I could handle that.

Best shrimp and snail for tank detritus?

Hello! My 5g is up and running smoothly with it's one betta inhabitant, but I've been thinking of getting a clean-up crew (also for cuteness factor). I don't really have a problem with algae (yet?). I need something to clean up the detritus that collects in Mr. Fishy's tank - bits of plants...

Why won't my cycle finish? - Frustrated!

No. I read that I should not. It doesn't look overly scudgey either, so I've left it alone.

Why won't my cycle finish? - Frustrated!

So my methods are solid then? Just gotta wait it out?

Why won't my cycle finish? - Frustrated!

My fishless cycle has been going for 2 months now - shouldn't I be nearing the end?! I've posted here about a few issues/questions before, and those were very helpful, but now I feel like I'm in a cycle rut again! Tank is heated and filtered of course, and I have been using the pure ammonia...

    Betta not eating

I know you are worried that he is hungry, but don't be overly concerned of that yet. Saturday to Wednesday is only 4 days, and bettas can go a while without eating. Let's see if we can figure out why he isn't eating in the mean time. What are your water parameters? Is he showing any...

Did I stall or kill my cycle?

Thank you 8820 and Caliban. I did a smaller water change (because I'm a worrywart) and then dosed just to about 2ppm. Fingers crossed!

Did I stall or kill my cycle?

Wow, awesome responses! Thank you! I just got home and tested my pH...turns out I'm down to 6.4! Which is probably why things are slowing down, yes? Would it still be ok to do a water change since there is such a difference from that to my tap (7.6)? Ph fluctuations can shock fish - can they...

Did I stall or kill my cycle?

Ok thanks! You mentioned two water changes, how long between the two? Or just do the second one once I see nitrites dropping? I was hesitant to change any water, lest I mess it up! One last question: How to deal with evaporation? My house is INCREDIBLY dry, so water evaporates very fast...

    Starting a Betta Tank

Yes, it would be fine to put him in, as long as your substrate and decorations have been or are clean(ed). However, most people here HIGHLY recommend that you cycle your tank. Do you plan on doing it fish-in, since you want to add him tomorrow?

Did I stall or kill my cycle?

Oh dear :( So have I been doing it wrong all along? I read that I was supposed to keep adding ammonia and that it was ok for nitrites to be off the chart high, and that they would come down on their own. My pH has been stable so far, at 7.6, which is what it comes out of the tap as.

Did I stall or kill my cycle?

I've had my heated and filtered 5g going for a while now, started about a month ago with seeded filter material from my LFS (not so local! 65 miles! lol) and a cluster of anacharis stems. Everything seemed to be going well - I was dosing to about 3ish ppm with pure ammonia and putting some...

    Medication/Treatment advice needed!

Yes it does! I love him so much! Just wish he could "talk" like a cat or a dog, so I could at least have some direction in which to go :( I may treat him with the antiparastic here in the future. *sigh*

    Medication/Treatment advice needed!

My betta, Mr. Fishy, has been constipated for a while now - almost 3.5 weeks! I haven't seen one poo in his tank and his belly is bulging, NOT hugely distended, but I am afraid that it will get to that point. He has had pooing issues since I rescued him but this is the worst it's ever been. (I...

HELP!! My Oscar jumped out of the tank ?

I would monitor him closely, make sure nothing with his swimming changes, and check for cuts/bumps/abrasions. Watch for signs of stress. A clean and healthy tank atmosphere is probably the best thing for him.

    Constipated betta - really worried!

Hi guys - I'm fairly new here, but if you've read my other two posts, you know this is going to be about my rescue betta, Mr. Fishy. He's constipated and not passing poops! I'm worried because this has been an on-going issue with him, but he hasn't gone for this long before. My normal...

Fishless cyling, ammonia, and pH questions!

Thanks! Would you recommend doing a PWC to bring down the ammonia levels in the tank, and then just redose up to 3ppm when it starts to fall, to see if that helps the cycle? Or should I chuck it all and start again? The reason Fishy gets bottled spring water is that he used to belong to an...

    I'm new and I rescued a fish!

I do have a liquid kit, yes. I did also move some of the rocks to the new tank, should have mentioned that, sorry. I opted away from fish-in due to the fact that Mr. Fishy is easily stressed! He is "trucking along" but isn't at 100%. The previous owner was awful, so Fishy is still in what I...

Fishless cyling, ammonia, and pH questions!

Hello! This is my inaugural post! Not quite sure how to start, so I'll just dive in with my many questions! I am about 10 days into a fishless cycle using pure ammonia on a 5g, heated, nonplanted, filtered tank for my rescue betta. I did a lot of research beforehand and settled on the "add...
