    Plants with African cichlids

I personally wouldn’t try it. It’s more likely a waste of money and resources than not. Africans will just shred them, uproot them, etc.

    Plants That Won’t Be Eaten??

I’ll probably try anubias in my 75g then. Maybe some java ferns too. I was wondering—what kind of plants could I keep in my 10g N. multifasciatus colony tank? I think live plants would make that more bare tank pop, but I don’t know how they would fare with this species and their shells. I’ve...

    Plants That Won’t Be Eaten??

I’ll have to consider anubias. Do they get very large? I’d love to fill out the dead spaces in my tank with beautiful, large live plants. Is there any kind of fast-growing carpeting plants that might survive the carnage of my fish?

    Plants That Won’t Be Eaten??

Hey, all! I have long since dreamed of planting my 75g, but unfortunately I have silver dollars, which are voracious plant-eaters. The duckweed I bought disappeared before the night was over. So I was wondering: what plants could I possibly use in this tank? I need something hardy and simple...

Please Help—I’m Truly At A Loss

Nitrite stands somewhere between .25 & .5ppm. Nitrate is really high, somewhere between 40-80.

Please Help—I’m Truly At A Loss

For the first time since I started this whole mess, I’ve been witnessing some ammonia spikes. The first one was last week, when it got to almost 8.0ppm. Immediately I did a huge water change, double dosed on Prime, and continued adding bacteria from the filter cartridge of my 10gallon. Today...

Please Help—I’m Truly At A Loss

Thanks for all the replies. Ammonia seems slightly lower than it usually is, but my eyes are bad and that may be wishful thinking. My water condition actually isn’t usually Prime, as I live in the middle of nowhere and it’s hard to get, but I’m getting some tomorrow. I figure I’ll start...

Please Help—I’m Truly At A Loss

Testing tonight, nitrites stand at somewhere between .25 and .5ppm. I was contemplating buying bacteria in a bottle, such as Tetra SafeStart, but I’ve never used it before on any of my tanks and am afraid of causing more harm than good.

Please Help—I’m Truly At A Loss

Towards the end of March, I decided I was tired of my gravel in my 75g and changed it to black sand, which I thought was beautiful. However, it has caused me a nightmare in my four-year+ established tank. Let me explain. My process changing the substrate: I drained old tank water into two large...

    Electric yellow ciclids

A 20 gallon with 12 electric yellow cichlids, plus a bumblebee cichlid? That's definitely overcrowded. Bumblebees can get to a decent size and are very aggressive. I speak from experience here. If I'm not mistaken, electric yellows are rather timid and stay rather small, although the exact size...

    White Algae Growing

Definitely a possibility. Didn't even think of that.

    White Algae Growing

Also, what kind of pleco is it? Many species put out a tremendous bioload, which would require you to do larger water changes more frequently.

    White Algae Growing

When you say you change the Aqueon filter, do you mean the cartridges? If so, that's a big issue. If you change your cartridges, you're tank must go through another cycle, as you're getting rid of the vast majority of your good bacteria. You should just rinse them in old tank water. Also 25%...

    White Algae Growing

I don't think the filter is the problem here. If water flow is a concern, there are cheaper ways to increase it than buying a new filter. Powerheads work well, in my experience. Also, +1 on the snail recommendation. By the way, what's your tank maintenance schedule like?

Glass vs. Acrylic Glass for 75 Gallon Tank

I will say this about larger glass tanks. My grandmother had the 75g that I'm now using over twelve years ago. It then sat in her garage for a few years. And now I've been using it for nearly three years. It has never leaked or given me issues.

    Male or female?

I usually feed peas, zucchini, and cucumbers, which are a favorite of my fish. I typically just cut it up into really small, bite-size pieces and drop into the tank.

    How Are Everyone's Aquariums?

In my 75g I have two blood parrot cichlids, a group of silver dollars, and my senegal bichir. In my 10g, I have my Neolamprologus multifasciatus colony. They've recently rescaped the sand in their tank and had more fry. Definitely going to have to get rid of some very soon.

    Changing Substrate

I appreciate all the answers everyone. I won't be changing the substrate for a little while, as getting enough of the kind I want is costly. But all the responses have greatly helped me plan my course of action for later in the year. Thank you!

    Changing Substrate

I've had my 75g for nearly three years now, and I've decided I'm tired of the multi-colored gravel. It's too deep, and it's an eyesore. Is there a way to change my substrate out without harming the fish or having a mini cycle? How should I go about doing this?

    Help/Mentoring with Aquascaping Project

Following. I'm planning on scaping a ten gallon soon as my next project and I'm very excited, as it's my first real attempt at aquascaping.

    Celestial pearl danios with scars

I don't think that chlorine would effect ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels in any way, as the two are unrelated. Because of this, unless you are testing specifically for chlorine, the levels you test will not change. Despite not effecting ammonia, etc, chlorine WILL negatively effect your...

    Hello!

Welcome to the community! I'm also a high school student who began keeping fish a few years ago. There's a lot to learn in this hobby, but it's so much fun when you have beautiful aquatic worlds in your home!
