Lots of pics!!! The crabs seem to be settling down now, less shy and more active. There have been a couple crab fights, not much violence thankfully. The little RCC likes sneaking up on the fiddler and stealing food, even though theres more right in front of him! I have a vid of fiddling and a crab fight, gonna upload soon. I can't believe I didn't get crabs sooner, they're awesome :D

RCC in the filter(before I changed it to custom media). He won't be getting in there anymore.

Let me out! (don't I look like a spider?)

They're getting used to me being around. Didn't mind the photoshoot so much.

I took a sponge and bio media for AC10s and cut it to size. So now there's much more filter media, no bypass and no space for crabbies. Hopefully it'll be much easier to cycle and clean than cartridges.

Yep, she is definitely carrying eggs. I doubt I can raise them, so what do I do?

Heres a pic of the eggs:

Oh, and I put in an algae wafer and my two ghost shrimp were fighting over it, soo cute :D The kept on waving their claws at each other and then one would try to drag the wafer away. Greedy little things, the wafer was bigger than they were...

So how does one go about getting info to start there own crab mansion?

A lot of Googling :D You basically need a half land half water setup, with brackish water. Oh, and I would use a plexiglass divider and silicone sealant. I was cheap and used a piece of slate, but the water makes the sand all soggy. I think I'm gonna upgrade to a 20gal and learn from my mistakes...

If you keep the sand moist and start a little burrow this your fingers they wilk probably burrow, atleast the fiddler. FTS?

I'm worried about mold or fungus, because the sand is constantly wet. Plus there's a lot of evaporation and it fogs up the glass. Hard to see anything in there. What is FTS?

FTS= Full tank shot

Ya, i am still planning my crabitat. Whether it will happen yet i dont know. You can plan your cage for the moistness and clean your sand every 6 months or so.

So is a 10g enough real estate for 2 fiddlers and 2 red clawed crabs?

From what I've researched, you can keep 1-4 crabs in a 10gal, and they will be fine, and act natural(fight a bit). Or you can crowd them to like 8 in a 10gal and they won't fight anymore. I guess as long as the filter can take the bioload, and they have room to move w/o murdering each other, it should be okay. Some fighting seems to be normal when they're in small numbers.

Actually thats wrong, especially a interspecies mix. It really depends on how many males you have in the tank and i would stop at a 1:2 male female ratio. I see trouble in the future.

Well, that's a shame, because after seeing this thread I really want a crabitat :p

I guess I will just have to do my own research and come to my own conclusions, just like fish

Still, although I can't comment on the long-term viability of such a plan, as I am uninformed, this crabitat is FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! It's one of the most fun threads on AA right now.

Darn, these algae wafers are ruining my water quality. Ammonia and Nitrite went to .25ppm. I guess I'm going to need a replacement food. Trying crushed flakes on the land side now... Hope they like it.
