I have one of the heads on the return line pointed up and it breaks the surface just fine, you can also make your own spray bar if you like.

I find when doing that as water evaporates it can start splashing a bit if you don't have a top on your tank.

But that does work perfectly fine.

You'll have to adjust it at just right angle or stay on top of the water level, I have found I can go about a week with out having to worry about the water level.
