Depending on your ph... You can add any kind of fish that is non-aggressive and have small fins. Bettas will rarely defend themselves from fin pickers but will attack any fish that have large fins.

Definatley get some cories for the bottom. They work great with Bettas as the 2 leave each other alone. Get maybe 5-7 for a tank your size.

I have also had great luck with white cloud minnows and bettas. A school of these would be nice in a 20 gallon.
