I was looking to buy a stand for my new 55gallon tank but the price was ridiculous. They wanted around $250-280. So I decided to build my own. So far i have put in 4 hours and about $60. Should be done with another 4hrs hopefully. I'm gonna stain it and build a matching canopy. This is my first stand build, I think it's going great! It's fun too!

looks good so far although I'd add a bit more vertical support in the corners that's a lot of weight to entrust to just a few screws.
Actually I just took a better look at your pics looks like you braced it with the additional I believe 1x4's in the front, do you plan to brace the rear the same way as the front?

I'm a big fan of over building stands since they have to hold so much weight.

Yes the 1x4 will go around to a certain extent. But this is in no means done yet lol. I will keep updating with pictures. Thank you for the concerns!

The stand is pretty much finished. Might add a shelf inside door. And I'll build a matching canopy.

that's pretty solid man!

looks like the corners don't rest too much on the top 1x4, but rather on the vertical legs you have. so it looks like the weight there wouldn't be a problem.

nicely done.

Thanks man. It's my first stand build, it doesnt look to bad. I did all my cuts with a circular saw so the trim angles aren't to square. But I'm gonna build another and replace the particle board stand that came with my 60gal from petsmart.

Yes, although it might seem like its under built, it's definitely not. Most stands you buy in stores are made of cheap particle boards or MDF. I built the stand for my 75 gallon tank, and I guarantee it could easily hold a 350 gallon tank! Lol

That is the frame of the first stand I built, all with 2x4's. best thing about building your own..... The height of your choosing!!! Instead of the lousy 30-32 inch stands that are in stores I made it at 42inches! No bending down to view this guy's tank!!!!! Lol
