56 gallon column tank not long enough for africans?

I have 56 column tank that is currently cycling, and I'm thinking I want African cichlids. I'm just not sure if there is enough space for them to swim from side to side. Here is a link to the tank: MARINELAND® 56 Gallon Column Aquarium Ensemble

This is how the tank looks now with a few feeder minnows for a fish in cycle. Would the coral decor work with Africans? I would like to keep it because I just bought it and it was pretty spendy.

I would have gone for more natural looking stones so you could make caves for the Africans, but I'm no African expert

Yeah, when I setup the tank I wasn't planning on cichlids. But I've never had Africans before, so I think I wanna give it a try!

Do you have any species you would recommend? I've never had cichlids besides Bolivian Rams and angelfish.
