A good plant substrate

Hey all i have a 120l tank with black sand and ive had plants in it b4 but the never did well in the nutrient barren sand i was wondering what i could mix into my sand ps cant fin root tabs anywhere or the special plant mix stuff.

Also can you use normal potting soil?

Yeah you can use an "organic" potting soil as the first layer. Then place a nice thick cap of sand on it so that it doesn't dirty your tank.
