Will a canister filter work in only 5 inches of water.I want to have the intake in my wet dry filter.then the return fixed into the wet dry intake.therefore my wet dry filter has a filter of its own. Plus more water will be recycled.every time I add water into my filter it stirs up all sorts of junk that gets return to tank.so I figured that this would keep the portion around my return line a bit cleaner.but cant get cannister filter to work in shallow water????

greetings.

a canister filter cannot work if it is not filled completely with water, this is because the filters' rotor is in the top of the canister, and if the rotor is not under water it simply spins around in the air and can't move the water.

I talking about the intake hose that goes in tank.will it work in 4 or so inches of water?the actual canister is full

yes, as long as the intake hose remains under water while the filter is running there souldn't be any trouble with that. if the filter fails to start, then you might have yourself a hydro lock and you need to prime the filter again.
