Lights are either way. I kept mine on and didn't see anything bad because of it. I would definitely keep filter on. It will give more water flow and you should put some rock rubble in the canister filter. More rock for bacteria to adhere to.

Lights off to fight off algae. What kind of filter? Cannister?
Any Base rock to go along with the LR already in the tank?
How much LR are you getting?

Canister filter.... 100 pounds of base rock already in tank.... 50 pounds lr coming tommorow.... Shipped

So no sump? Then you need to run the cannister for flow in the tank. You can add LR rubble to the cannister as suggested, but no other filter media for now.

Just let the LR cycle the tank.
