acid test for natural rock?

What is this and why do you do it? I have an almost unlimited supply of free rock all over my county and have used some in my tank. I sterilized it but now I'm worried.

I just use vinegar on the rocks I find for my tanks. I put a few drops on it and if there's a reaction of any sort, then I don't use it. No reaction, I rinse off the piece and put it into the tank.

Ok I saw someone mention it and was curious. I'm gonna have to pull mine out and test them. Fish all are fine but still...
