So just today I went to the fish store and bought java moss and another plant that the store keeper suggested. He also sold me some good gravel for my plants and also activated carbon. Being my first time using the carbon pellets I didn't realize it needs to be in the filter.. I know really dumb but everyone makes mistakes. Instead I put it on the gravel floor and mixed it in. Will it still do the same effect by clearing my tank water? Also will it have bad side effects since I won't be able to remove it?

Carbon takes nutrients and meds out of the water. I would scoop it out with a fish net or get as much out as you can. There is not much need for it in a planted tank.

If its too much of a hassle to take it out I would just leave it in there. After a couple weeks it's going to be exhausted and not going to do anything anyway.
